My Future by Belaynihe - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
My name is Belaynihe Wolde, and I am a rising college freshman about to embark on my journey to major in Nursing. As I reflect on my academic experiences, one particular challenge stands out that has profoundly shaped my approach to learning and problem-solving.
During my junior year of high school, I encountered a significant academic hurdle in my chemistry class. Chemistry was a subject that initially piqued my interest, but it quickly became a source of stress and frustration. The concepts seemed abstract, and despite my efforts, I struggled to grasp the material. My grades started to slip, and I felt overwhelmed.
The turning point came after I received a disappointing grade on a midterm exam. I realized that I needed to change my approach if I wanted to succeed. The first step I took was seeking help. I reached out to my chemistry teacher, who was incredibly supportive and willing to provide extra assistance. We scheduled regular after-school sessions where she patiently explained the concepts I found challenging. Her dedication and encouragement made a significant difference in my understanding of the material.
In addition to seeking help from my teacher, I also joined a study group with some of my classmates. Working with peers allowed me to see different perspectives and methods for tackling problems. We would meet several times a week, discussing homework assignments and preparing for upcoming tests. This collaborative environment fostered a sense of camaraderie and made learning more engaging.
Moreover, I realized that my study habits needed improvement. I began to adopt more effective study techniques, such as breaking down complex topics into smaller, manageable parts. I also started using visual aids like diagrams and charts to better understand the relationships between different chemical elements and reactions. These strategies helped me retain information more effectively and increased my confidence in the subject.
Another critical aspect of overcoming this challenge was time management. Balancing my chemistry studies with other coursework and extracurricular activities required careful planning. I created a study schedule that allocated specific times for chemistry practice, ensuring that I dedicated enough time to master the material without neglecting my other responsibilities.
Throughout this process, perseverance played a crucial role. There were moments when I felt like giving up, but I reminded myself of my long-term goals and the importance of resilience. I learned to view setbacks as opportunities for growth rather than failures. This mindset shift was instrumental in maintaining my motivation and pushing through difficult times.
By the end of the semester, my hard work and determination paid off. I was able to improve my grades significantly, and more importantly, I developed a genuine appreciation for chemistry. This experience taught me valuable lessons about the power of seeking help, the benefits of collaboration, and the importance of effective study habits and time management.
Looking back, I am grateful for the challenges I faced in chemistry because they prepared me for future academic endeavors. As I enter college to pursue a degree in Nursing, I am aware that I will encounter new challenges, but I am confident in my ability to overcome them. The skills and strategies I developed during my high school chemistry class have equipped me with a strong foundation for tackling difficult subjects and adapting to new learning environments.
In conclusion, my experience with overcoming academic challenges in chemistry has shaped me into a more resilient and resourceful student. It has reinforced my belief in the importance of perseverance, collaboration, and effective study habits. As I continue my educational journey, I am committed to applying these lessons to achieve my goals and make a positive impact in the field of Nursing.
