Studio arts by Ben - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

As a freshman at the Savannah College of Art & Design, I have faced several academic challenges, but one of the most significant was adjusting to the intense workload and high expectations of college life. Coming from high school, I was used to a certain pace and style of learning. However, college presented a whole new set of demands that I had to quickly adapt to. Balancing my various class projects required me to manage my time effectively and prioritize my tasks efficiently.

One of the most challenging experiences was during my first semester when I was assigned to create 2 full drawings of my dorm room along with my dorm building, to showcase 1 point and 2 point perspective. This normally wouldn’t have been a problem, but because of the fact I had other projects that took up the majority of my time before this, I had very minimal time to complete the two drawings. The deadline was tight, and after working for hours upon hours straight, I managed to complete the projects in time.

To tackle this, I decided to break the project down into manageable parts. I set small, achievable goals for each stage of the process. This approach helped me to focus on one task at a time, which made the project feel less daunting. I also reached out to my professor for guidance. During our meeting, she helped me refine my ideas and encouraged me to trust my instincts. Her feedback was invaluable, and it gave me the confidence to move forward with my project.

Another key factor in overcoming this challenge was collaborating with my peers. I joined a study group with fellow students who were also working on the project. We shared our ideas and provided feedback to each other. This collaborative environment was incredibly supportive and inspiring. It was reassuring to know that I was not alone in facing these challenges, and together, we motivated each other to push through.

Time management was crucial in this process. I created a detailed schedule that allocated specific times for research, sketching, and creating. I learned to prioritize tasks based on deadlines and importance. This discipline helped me stay on track and ensured that I dedicated enough time to each aspect of the project.

As the deadline approached, I felt more confident in my work. I had developed a concept that I was proud of and had executed it to the best of my ability. When I presented my final piece, I was nervous but also excited to share my work with my classmates and professor. The feedback I received was positive, and I was proud of what I had accomplished.

This experience taught me several valuable lessons. I learned the importance of breaking down large tasks into smaller, manageable steps. I realized the value of seeking help and collaborating with others. Most importantly, I discovered the power of perseverance and dedication. These skills have been essential in my academic journey and will continue to guide me in the future.

Overcoming this challenge also reinforced my passion for the arts. It reminded me why I chose to study Arts, Studio Arts, and Theatre/Performing Arts in the first place. The opportunity to create and express myself is something I cherish deeply, and I am grateful for the challenges that push me to grow as an artist and a student.

In conclusion, facing and overcoming this academic challenge was a significant milestone in my college experience. It taught me resilience and the importance of adapting to new situations. I am now better equipped to handle future challenges, and I am excited to continue my journey at the Savannah College of Art & Design. I am committed to making the most of my education and using my skills to contribute positively to the world of art and beyond.
