The upbringing of the community by Brandon - January 2024 Scholarship Essay
My family and I have always loved church, from the singing to the preaching, to going to the back of the hall where the congregation comes as a family to eat and talk for hours and hours. Those have been the best times of my life because I am able to share it with the people I cherish. Our church is very community and family based, so we try to give back as much as possible. So we thought and thought of just how we can do this effectively in order to give back exponentially because we wanted this to become a huge thing. And that's when we thought of the homeless and giving back to them because we always knew they deserved a second chance because we all fall on our feet and need a second chance to make things right. That's when we came up with " Breakfast For Champions", this would intel that we would open up our church to the less fortunate every last Sunday of the month and host a breakfast gathering where the homeless could eat all the breakfast they wanted while also choosing clothing and necessities they need to last them, like personal items and such.
We never knew though that the outcome would be so big. Breakfast For Champions became a monumental event in our church and meant so much, not just to us but every single person that just needed a helping hand, a prayer, just needed someone to grasp onto and let them know that they will be okay because as humans we all need that reassurance that things will work in our favor. It was such a blessing to see the smiles on every one's face when they got to receive hot food and warm clothing on days that were unbearable. This was becoming such a blessing that we actually started to do more and on Saturdays we would go and serve hot coffee and bread and butter to the homeless and also the building next to us that help people trying to get help from addiction. Me and my family always had a special place in our heart to those that needed help because we all struggle and have obstacles that are hard to cross over and just need that push to continue. Helping the community has always been important to me and I will never stop trying to achieve that importance in our community and in the streets of the broken.
This impact that this outreach has made in my life was never thought to be this big but has changed how I do and see things way differently. Homelessness was always on my mind because my family had a deep passion for helping people because of what we saw in the streets and people sleeping outside in the coldest of nights just broke us to pieces knowing that we has a family were very blessed and had a rood over our head. So in doing this event every last Sunday has just been a huge opportunity for me because i can see not just my family happy but every single person in the world that are struggling with addiction and homelessness. In the future i want to hopefully continue this event/outreach to continue to give back to our community even if its small because small change always turns into bigger change and that's what I've always strive for.
