Which Leadership Skills You Need For College by Brooke - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

Leadership skills are absolutely important and necessary in order to have a successful college experience. Specifically, conflict resolution, encouragement, and time/resource management are vital.

Whether a student has volunteered to lead in a peer mediation group or is simply having issues with his roommate, knowing how to properly diffuse a situation and steer a conversation toward compromise by using conflict resolution strategies is a valuable skill. Successful resolution makes for a less stressful atmosphere for all involved.

Another often forgotten leadership skill is encouragement. Knowing how to properly motivate group members is a hallmark of an effective leader because application of this skill shows the value he places on those for which he is responsible. Encouragement is valuable in a college environment because it boosts the morale of those around the encourager, making for a more positive and uplifting campus environment.

Lastly, aptitude in time and resource management is key. A quality leader knows how to budget his energy in order to most effectively complete a task. In college, this translates to properly balancing time and money spent on social events, academics, and relaxation/entertainment in order to maximize the effectiveness of each category.

In conclusion, three necessary leadership skills for college success are aptitude in conflict resolution, encouragement, and time/resource management. With these skills, a student can expect to thrive while in college as well as in their future careers and personal lives.
