Falling Down and Standing Up by Brooklyn - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

As I look back on my high school years, one of the most challenging academic experiences I faced was during my junior year in AP Biology. Science has always been a subject I am passionate about, and I knew that I wanted to pursue Biology as my major when I go to the University of Missouri. However, the rigor of AP Biology was much more demanding than I had anticipated.

From the start, I was excited to dive deeper into the subject I loved, but I quickly realized that the pace and depth of the course were unlike anything I had experienced before. The first few weeks were overwhelming, with complex concepts thrown at us rapidly. I found myself struggling to keep up with the material and the fast-paced lectures. My initial enthusiasm began to wane as I faced low scores on quizzes and tests, something I was not accustomed to given my previous academic success.

The turning point came during a particularly challenging unit on cellular respiration and photosynthesis. Despite studying hard, I received a disappointing grade on the test. I felt defeated and questioned my ability to succeed in a subject I was so passionate about. It was a humbling experience, and I knew I needed to change my approach if I wanted to improve and truly understand the material.

First, I sought help from my teacher. I scheduled a meeting with her to discuss my struggles and ask for advice. She was incredibly supportive and suggested I form a study group with classmates. She also recommended additional resources, such as online videos and practice quizzes, which could reinforce my understanding. This conversation reassured me that seeking help was a strength, not a weakness.

Taking my teacher's advice, I reached out to a few classmates who were also finding the course challenging. We formed a study group and met regularly to review material, discuss difficult concepts, and quiz each other. This collaborative environment was immensely helpful. Explaining concepts to others helped solidify my understanding, and hearing different perspectives often clarified things I had been struggling with.

Additionally, I began to organize my study schedule more effectively. I set aside specific times each day dedicated solely to biology, breaking down the material into manageable chunks. I used a variety of study methods, such as flashcards, diagrams, and teaching the material to family members, to reinforce my learning. This structured approach helped me stay on top of the coursework and reduced my stress levels.

Over time, my efforts paid off. My grades gradually improved, and I began to feel more confident in my understanding of the subject. The experience taught me the importance of perseverance and adaptability. I learned that it is okay to struggle and that the key to overcoming challenges is to approach them with an open mind and a willingness to seek help and try new strategies.

This challenging experience in AP Biology not only strengthened my academic skills but also reinforced my passion for biology. It taught me resilience and the value of collaboration, skills that I know will be crucial as I pursue my studies at Mizzou. I am excited to continue exploring the field of biology and to face new challenges with the lessons I have learned.

In conclusion, my experience with AP Biology was a pivotal moment in my academic journey. It was a reminder that challenges are opportunities for growth and that with determination and support, I can overcome obstacles.
