overcoming my experience by Bryana - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

As a college junior at Purdue University Global majoring in Childcare, I have faced several academic challenges, but one stands out as particularly significant. It was during my sophomore year that I encountered a difficult course that tested not only my academic abilities but also my determination and resilience.

The course was Child Development, which is a fundamental part of my major. I was excited to dive into the subject because it aligns with my passion for working with children. However, as the semester progressed, I found myself struggling with the volume of information and the complexity of the theories we were studying. My initial enthusiasm was overshadowed by the difficulty I had in grasping some of the core concepts, and my grades began to reflect this struggle.

The stress of not performing well in a subject so crucial to my future career was overwhelming. I felt like I was letting myself down and questioned my ability to succeed in my chosen field. My GPA, which was already not as high as I wanted it to be, was at risk of dropping further. It was a challenging time, and I knew I had to find a way to overcome it.

The first step I took was to acknowledge that I needed help. This was not easy for me, as I have always prided myself on being independent and self-sufficient. However, I realized that seeking assistance was not a sign of weakness but rather a step towards improvement. I reached out to my professor and scheduled a meeting to discuss my difficulties. To my relief, my professor was understanding and supportive. She provided additional resources and suggested strategies to help me better understand the material.

In addition to seeking help from my professor, I also formed a study group with a few classmates. This turned out to be a game-changer. Working with my peers allowed me to gain different perspectives on the material and provided a supportive environment where we could share our struggles and successes. We met regularly to review lecture notes, discuss readings, and quiz each other. The collaborative effort not only improved my understanding but also boosted my confidence.

I also made changes to my study habits. I started dedicating specific times each day to review and practice what I had learned. I found that breaking down the material into smaller, manageable chunks made it easier to digest. I also used online resources and educational videos to supplement my learning, which helped reinforce the concepts in a way that resonated with me.

Throughout this process, I learned the importance of perseverance and adaptability. I realized that setbacks are a natural part of the learning experience and that it is how we respond to them that truly defines our academic journey. By staying committed to my goals and being open to new strategies, I was able to improve my performance in the course.

By the end of the semester, my hard work paid off. I managed to raise my grade significantly, and more importantly, I gained a deeper understanding of child development. This experience taught me that challenges are opportunities for growth and that with determination and the right support, I can overcome obstacles.

Reflecting on this experience, I am grateful for the lessons it taught me. As a Black woman pursuing a degree in Childcare, I am aware of the unique challenges I may face in my academic and professional journey. However, this experience has reinforced my belief in my ability to overcome adversity and succeed.

I am committed to using what I have learned to not only excel in my studies but also to make a positive impact in the field of childcare. I want to be a role model for other students who may face similar challenges and show them that it is possible to overcome them with perseverance and support.

In conclusion, the academic challenge I faced in my Child Development course was a pivotal moment in my college journey. It tested my resilience and taught me valuable lessons about seeking help, collaborating with others, and adapting my study strategies. Overcoming this challenge has made me more confident in my abilities and more determined to succeed in my field. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my story and for the support that has helped me along the way.
