Taking one step at a time by Bryn - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

When I first arrived at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln as a freshman, I was both excited and nervous. I had always done well in high school, graduating with a 3.9 GPA, and I was eager to dive into my accounting major. However, the transition from high school to college was more challenging than I anticipated. One of the most difficult academic experiences I faced was during my first semester in my introductory accounting course.

In high school, I had always been able to manage my time effectively, balancing my studies with extracurricular activities. But college was a different story. The pace was faster, the expectations were higher, and I quickly realized that the study habits that had served me well in high school were not enough. My first few weeks were overwhelming, with lectures, assignments, and exams all demanding my attention.

The turning point came after I received my first exam grade in the accounting course. I was shocked to see a score that was much lower than I had expected. It was a wake-up call that I needed to change my approach if I wanted to succeed in my chosen field. I felt a mix of disappointment and determination. I knew I had to find a way to overcome this challenge.

The first step I took was to reach out for help. I realized that I could not do it alone, and I needed to use the resources available to me. I started attending office hours with my professor, who was incredibly supportive and willing to help me understand the concepts I was struggling with. These one-on-one sessions were invaluable, as they allowed me to ask questions and get clarification on topics that were confusing.

I prioritized getting enough sleep, eating well, and making time for physical activity. These habits helped me stay focused and energized, allowing me to tackle my studies with a clear mind.

As the semester progressed, I noticed a significant improvement in my performance. My grades in the accounting course steadily increased, and I felt more confident in my abilities. By the time the final exam came around, I was well-prepared and managed to achieve a grade that I was proud of. This experience taught me the importance of resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges.

Overcoming this academic obstacle not only strengthened my understanding of accounting but also taught me valuable lessons about perseverance and the importance of seeking help when needed. It showed me that challenges are opportunities for growth, and with the right mindset and support, they can be overcome.

Looking back, I am grateful for the experience because it pushed me out of my comfort zone and forced me to develop new skills and strategies. It has prepared me for future challenges, both academically and in life. I am now more confident in my ability to tackle difficult situations and am committed to continuing my journey in accounting with the same determination and resilience.
