Tackling Challenges by Caitlyn - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
My journey through college has been filled with many lessons, but one of the most significant challenges I faced was during my sophomore year at Missouri Western State University. As an Education major, I have always been passionate about learning and teaching, but balancing the demands of college life with my academic responsibilities proved to be more difficult than I initially expected.
During my sophomore year, I enrolled in a particularly demanding course that focused on educational psychology. The subject was fascinating, but the workload was intense. We were required to read extensive materials, engage in complex discussions, and complete a variety of projects and exams. Initially, I thought I could handle it all with my usual study routine, but soon I found myself struggling to keep up. My grades began to slip, and I felt overwhelmed by the pressure.
The turning point came after I received a disappointing grade on a midterm exam. I realized that I needed to change my approach if I wanted to succeed not only in this class but in my pursuit of becoming an educator. I decided to seek help and make some changes to my study habits.
First, I reached out to my professor. It was intimidating at first, but I knew I needed guidance. I scheduled a meeting during office hours and explained my situation. My professor was understanding and offered valuable advice on how to better manage my time and prioritize tasks. She also suggested some additional resources, such as tutoring sessions and study groups, which turned out to be incredibly helpful.
I also began to implement a more structured study schedule. I set aside specific times each day dedicated solely to studying, free from distractions. This helped me stay organized and ensured that I was consistently reviewing the material, rather than cramming at the last minute. Additionally, I started using a planner to keep track of assignments, deadlines, and upcoming exams. This simple tool made a significant difference in reducing my stress levels and keeping me on track.
Joining a study group was another crucial step in overcoming this challenge. Collaborating with my peers allowed me to gain different perspectives on the material and helped me understand concepts that I found difficult on my own. We supported each other, shared notes, and discussed topics in depth, which enhanced my learning experience. It also created a sense of community and accountability, motivating me to stay committed to my studies.
Despite these efforts, there were still times when I felt discouraged. However, I reminded myself of my passion for education and my goal of becoming a teacher. I focused on the bigger picture and the impact I hoped to have on future students. This mindset shift helped me stay motivated and pushed me to persevere through the tough times.
By the end of the semester, my hard work paid off. I managed to improve my grades in the educational psychology course and gained a deeper understanding of the subject. More importantly, I learned valuable lessons about resilience, time management, and the importance of seeking help when needed. This experience taught me that challenges are an inevitable part of the academic journey, but they also provide opportunities for growth and learning.
Reflecting on this experience, I am grateful for the difficulties I faced because they helped shape me into a more determined and resourceful student. As I continue my studies in education, I carry these lessons with me, knowing that they will serve me well in my future career as a teacher. I am committed to using my experiences to inspire and support my future students, encouraging them to embrace challenges and view them as opportunities for growth.
In conclusion, overcoming this academic challenge was not easy, but it was a pivotal moment in my college journey. It reinforced my passion for education and my commitment to becoming an effective teacher. I am proud of how far I have come and am excited for the future, knowing that I have the tools and mindset to tackle any challenges that may come my way.
