My name is Calista Bruce, and I am a junior at Rasmussen University, majoring in Education with a focus on Teacher Education, Teaching, and Childcare. As someone who is passionate about becoming an educator, I have faced various academic challenges that have shaped my journey. One particular experience stands out as both challenging and transformative, and it taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, adaptability, and the importance of community support.
During my sophomore year, I enrolled in a course on educational psychology, which was known for its rigorous curriculum and demanding workload. I was excited about the subject because understanding how children learn and think is crucial for any aspiring teacher. However, as the semester progressed, I found myself struggling to keep up with the pace of the class. The material was dense, and the assignments required a level of analytical thinking that I had not fully developed yet. I spent countless hours reading and re-reading the textbook, but I often felt overwhelmed and unsure of my ability to grasp the concepts.
The turning point came when I received a low grade on the first major exam. It was a wake-up call that I needed to change my approach if I wanted to succeed in the course. I realized that I could not overcome this challenge alone, so I decided to reach out for help. I began by speaking with my professor during office hours. She was incredibly supportive and provided me with additional resources to help me understand the material better. She also encouraged me to join a study group with some of my classmates.
Joining the study group was one of the best decisions I made. It was comforting to know that I was not the only one facing difficulties, and working together allowed us to share different perspectives and learning strategies. We met twice a week, and during these sessions, we would discuss the readings, quiz each other, and explain concepts in our own words. This collaborative environment not only improved my understanding of the subject but also boosted my confidence.
In addition to the study group, I took advantage of the tutoring services offered by the university. The tutors helped me develop better study habits and taught me how to approach complex problems systematically. They also introduced me to various mnemonic devices and visualization techniques that made it easier to retain information. With their guidance, I learned to break down large tasks into manageable parts and set realistic goals for each study session.
Another key factor in overcoming this academic challenge was learning to manage my time more effectively. I created a detailed study schedule that allocated specific time slots for reading, reviewing notes, and completing assignments. By prioritizing my tasks and setting deadlines, I was able to stay organized and reduce the stress that came with last-minute cramming.
Throughout this experience, I was reminded of the importance of resilience and a growth mindset. I learned that setbacks are not failures but opportunities to learn and grow. Instead of viewing the low exam grade as a reflection of my abilities, I chose to see it as a stepping stone to improvement. This mindset shift was crucial in maintaining my motivation and determination to succeed.

I gained a deeper understanding of how to support students who may face similar challenges, and I am committed to creating a classroom environment that fosters collaboration and encourages students to seek help when needed.
Reflecting on this experience, I am grateful for the support of my professor, classmates, and tutors. Their encouragement and guidance were instrumental in helping me overcome this academic obstacle. I am also proud of myself for taking the initiative to seek help and for not giving up when things got tough.
