The Mentor Who Helped Build Me by Callee - January 2025 Scholarship Essay

Throughout my life, many people have influenced me in different ways. But, when I think about someone who has had the most significant impact on my educational journey, I immediately think of my cheerleading coach, Mrs. Mary Wilson Booth. She has been more than just a coach to me. She has been a mentor, a motivator, and a role model. Over the years, she has not only taught me the physical skills needed for cheerleading but has also helped me grow as a person, showing me the importance of perseverance, self-confidence, and never giving up on myself, even when things get tough.

When I first joined the cheerleading team, I was unsure of myself. I was excited, but also nervous. I had never done cheerleading before, and I wasn't sure if I had the skills to succeed. I was worried about not being good enough or not fitting in with the team. But Ms. Mary saw potential in me from the very beginning. She encouraged me to push past my doubts and work hard. Even when I struggled, she was always there to remind me that I could do it. Her belief in me gave me the confidence to keep going, even when I didn’t believe in myself.

One of the things I appreciate most about my coach is how she leads by example. She never asked us to do something that she wasn’t willing to do herself. She would push herself just as hard as she pushed us, showing us that success comes from dedication, hard work, and a positive attitude. Whether we were practicing for a competition or simply going through a tough workout, she made sure we knew that we were all in it together. She created an environment where no one was left behind, and everyone was encouraged to be their best.

But the impact my coach had on me wasn't just about becoming better at cheerleading. She taught me valuable life lessons that I carry with me every day. One of the most important lessons she shared with me is the importance of perseverance. There were many times when I felt like giving up—when the practices felt too long, or when I was frustrated with how I was performing. But my coach always reminded me that challenges were part of the process and that giving up was never an option.

Ms. Mary also taught me the value of teamwork. Cheerleading is not an individual sport; it’s all about working together to achieve a common goal. She constantly emphasized the importance of supporting each other and lifting each other up, both on and off the mat. She encouraged us to celebrate each other’s successes and to be there for one another when things weren’t going as planned. This made us a stronger team and also helped me build deeper friendships with my teammates. The lessons I learned from Ms. Mary about teamwork have been useful in other areas of my life, especially in school and other group activities.

Another lesson she taught me was about self-belief. Before I joined the cheerleading team, I had a tendency to doubt myself. I often compared myself to others and wondered if I was good enough. But Ms. Mary made sure to remind me that my worth wasn’t based on how I compared to others. She taught me that I was capable of achieving anything I set my mind to, as long as I believed in myself and put in the effort.

In addition to teaching me valuable life skills, my coach has been a constant source of support. She has always been there for me when I needed advice, whether it was about cheerleading or something going on in my personal life. She is someone I can trust, and knowing that she believes in me has given me the courage to keep pushing forward, even in the most difficult times. Her support has shown me the importance of having a strong support system and how much of an impact a mentor can have on someone's growth.

Looking back on my time as a cheerleader, I realize that Ms. Mary has played a huge role in shaping the person I am today. She has helped me become more confident, resilient, and determined. She has taught me the importance of teamwork, perseverance, and believing in myself. Most importantly, she has shown me that no matter how tough life gets, I should never give up on myself.

In conclusion, my cheerleading coach has had a lasting impact on my educational journey. She has inspired me to be an all-around better person and has been there to guide me through the challenges and obstacles I’ve faced. Her encouragement, wisdom, and support have made me the person I am today, and I will forever be grateful for the lessons she has taught me. She is not just a coach—she is a mentor who has made a significant difference in my life.
