What adversities i overcame. by Carl - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
My name is Carl Ragan, and as I prepare to start my college journey, I am reminded of a challenging academic experience that taught me resilience and determination. During high school, I faced a significant hurdle that tested my ability to persevere and adapt. This experience not only shaped my approach to learning but also prepared me for the challenges I might encounter in college.
Throughout high school, I struggled to maintain a high GPA. My average was a 2.6, which was not where I wanted it to be. I found it particularly difficult to balance my coursework with other responsibilities. As a student interested in diverse fields such as electrical engineering, accounting, and business, I was eager to learn but often felt overwhelmed by the demands of my studies.
One of the toughest periods came during my junior year. I was taking a particularly challenging math class that was crucial for my future studies in engineering and finance. Despite my efforts, I found myself falling behind. The concepts were complex, and no matter how much time I spent studying, my grades did not reflect my hard work. I felt stuck and frustrated, questioning my ability to succeed in my chosen fields.
To overcome this challenge, I knew I had to change my approach. First, I sought help from my teachers. I realized that I needed to be proactive in asking questions and seeking clarification on topics I did not understand. My math teacher was incredibly supportive, offering extra help sessions after school. These sessions were invaluable, providing me with the one-on-one attention I needed to grasp the material.
Additionally, I formed a study group with classmates who were also struggling. Working together, we were able to share different perspectives and problem-solving techniques. This collaborative environment helped me gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter. I learned the importance of teamwork and how learning from others can enhance my own knowledge.
Time management was another critical area I needed to address. I started using a planner to organize my assignments and study schedule. By breaking down my workload into manageable tasks, I was able to focus on one thing at a time without feeling overwhelmed. This strategy helped me stay on top of my studies and reduced the stress that had been affecting my performance.
Through persistence and the support of my teachers and peers, I gradually improved my grades in math. More importantly, I gained confidence in my ability to tackle difficult subjects. This experience taught me that setbacks are not failures but opportunities to learn and grow. I understood that perseverance and a willingness to seek help when needed are essential skills for academic success.
Looking back, I am grateful for the challenges I faced in high school. They prepared me for the rigors of college and taught me valuable lessons about resilience and determination. As I enter college as a freshman, I am excited to pursue my interests in electrical engineering, accounting, and business. I know that these fields will present their own challenges, but I am ready to face them with the skills and mindset I developed during high school.
I am also aware of the importance of diversity and representation in these fields. As a Black and/or African American and White man, I am committed to contributing to a more inclusive environment in STEM and business. I hope to inspire others who may face similar challenges and show them that perseverance can lead to success.
In conclusion, the academic challenges I faced in high school taught me the value of hard work, collaboration, and resilience. These lessons have prepared me for the next step in my education and will continue to guide me as I pursue my goals. I am excited to bring this mindset to college and make the most of the opportunities ahead.
