The Struggle with English by Carlos - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
In life, many challenges are presented to many people. These challenges can be faced head on, can be avoided through alternate means, or can completely stop a person from continuing their journey. An example of these challenges comes from academics. Academics are a huge obstacle in a student's way to going far in life. During my journey, I have encountered many subjects that I have loved. Science, Math, Social Studies, and Engineering have been my all time favorite subjects, but the one subject that I have struggled with is English. In freshman year, I had bearly passed my English class in the first semester. I did not understand how the teacher wanted me to word things or describe topics in the book. I would describe them for what they were and for what they reminded me of, but I was bad making the whole thing connect. As I remember it now, it was like I was making a list rather than a creative interpretation. I realized early into my second semester that I had to use more of my creative side, which, to me, meant thinking about what things relate to the book. It was a real struggle for me, but I pushed through and kept thinking. Eventually, I got to a point that made it easy for me to connect things in the book with things in my everyday life. This caused me to enjoy reading, enjoy writing, and enjoy different ways of literature that I never thought I would like. I still liked learning about history, science, and other topics similar to that. Even now, I enjoy reading books that have to do with real life stories or real life nature. In the end, I ended up creating an understanding in my head that lets me read and connect easier. I went from just listing certain things in a book, to developing new connections between unrelated topics in books. I learned the struggle of English and pushed through that struggle.
