Carter Slusher Thomas More Tuition Essay by Carter - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

As I reflect on my first year at Thomas More University, one particular academic challenge stands out vividly in my mind. It was during my first semester, in my Introduction to Graphic Design course. I had always been passionate about art and design, but transitioning from creating art as a hobby to studying it at a collegiate level was a leap I underestimated. This experience taught me not only about graphic design but also about resilience, adaptability, and the importance of seeking support.

The challenge began with our first major project. We were tasked with creating a comprehensive design portfolio that showcased our understanding of basic design principles. The project was meant to push us out of our comfort zones and encourage us to experiment with new techniques and mediums. As someone who had primarily worked with pencil and paper, the thought of using digital tools felt overwhelming. I knew this project was crucial for setting the tone for my studies, and I wanted to prove to myself that I could succeed.

Initially, I struggled to grasp the software we were using. Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop were completely new to me, and I found myself lost in a sea of tutorials and manuals. My classmates seemed to pick up the tools much faster, and I began to doubt my abilities. I spent countless hours in the lab, trying to make sense of the layers, paths, and effects. Despite my efforts, my progress was slow, and the deadline loomed closer with each passing day. The pressure was immense, and I felt like I was falling behind.

Feeling frustrated and defeated, I realized I needed to change my approach. I reached out to my professor and explained my difficulties. To my surprise, she was incredibly understanding and offered to meet with me outside of class to go over the basics. Her patience and encouragement gave me the confidence to keep trying. I also started attending study groups with my peers, where we exchanged tips and tricks for using the software more effectively. These sessions became a lifeline, as they provided not only technical guidance but also moral support.

Another turning point was when I discovered online communities and forums dedicated to graphic design. These platforms were filled with experienced designers who were willing to share their knowledge and offer constructive feedback. Engaging with these communities taught me not only technical skills but also how to approach design challenges creatively. I learned to view my setbacks as learning opportunities and to embrace experimentation.

Through persistence and the support of my professor and peers, I gradually became more comfortable with the software. I learned to break down complex tasks into smaller, manageable steps, which made the process less daunting. I also started to enjoy experimenting with different styles and techniques, which helped me find my unique voice as a designer. This newfound confidence allowed me to push boundaries and take creative risks I had previously shied away from.

When the deadline finally arrived, I submitted my portfolio with a sense of accomplishment. It was not perfect, but it represented my growth and determination. The feedback I received from my professor was positive, and she noted the progress I had made since the beginning of the semester. This experience taught me the value of seeking help and the importance of perseverance. It was a reminder that growth often comes from stepping outside of our comfort zones and embracing challenges.

Reflecting on this challenge, I realize it was a pivotal moment in my academic journey. It reinforced my passion for graphic design and showed me that challenges are opportunities for growth. I learned that it is okay to struggle and that asking for help is a strength, not a weakness. This realization has empowered me to approach future challenges with a proactive mindset.

This experience has also shaped my approach to future challenges. I am now more proactive in seeking resources and support when needed, and I am more open to collaboration and feedback. I have carried these lessons into other areas of my life, both academic and personal, and they have been invaluable as I continue to navigate my college experience. Whether it is tackling a complex design project or managing my time effectively, the skills I developed during this challenge have been instrumental.

As I look ahead, I am excited to further develop my skills and explore new areas within graphic design. The challenges I faced in my first year have only strengthened my resolve to succeed and have prepared me for the challenges that lie ahead. I am grateful for the support I received and for the opportunity to learn and grow through this experience. My journey is just beginning, and I am eager to see where it takes me.

In conclusion, overcoming this academic challenge was a defining moment for me. It taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of community. I am proud of the progress I have made and am motivated to continue pushing myself to achieve my goals. This scholarship would provide invaluable support as I pursue my passion for graphic design and strive to make a positive impact through my work. With the lessons I have learned, I am confident that I can face any challenge that comes my way.
