If I were to give a tour of my High School to incoming Freshman, I'd offer advice that would've helped me out. I would start with talking about the route that would lead them towards success. This begins with a small detail that has a large impact on their success in High School. It asks very little of you, yet it is easily dismissed which is, attending. Being there is what leads you to success. It is the everyday practice of learning that makes you prepared for tests. It is easy to find yourself in the wrong crowd who does not attend school for reasons that may not even apply to you, yet they can affect you equally.
This is a habit that can follow you to when you have a job. Regardless if it is a job that required a degree or no education history you still need to attend everyday. No matter if you are the best worker there is no use if you do not attend everyday. Being able to rely on someone is a large factor when it comes to corporate companies who believe that time is money. In that analogy it is your time, therefore you are the money.
Another piece of advice is to find ways to stay motivated. You may have intelligence in all areas of the core classes you are taking but if you don't have any motivation to pursue higher education, you will not find a purpose in applying your skills to the courses you are taking. Being able to have a purpose in what you are doing creates a drive within that will allow you to reach areas you wouldn't have thought of. Being able to stay motivated and find a reason on why you should walk into the door everyday in this school is a key factor into success.
Gresham High School is currently 113 years old. It has a lot of history within the framework and architecture of the building. The building is going to be halfway torn down and remodeled in 2019. I would teach the students that what they will experience in the new building is not the same as I would. This is symbolic for our experiences. There are things that we do that impact others for years, similarly to the building which has been standing since 1906 and impacted many students for years. But the building is getting remodeled, therefore they are able to remodel their experiences in life and get back together at any point when they feel like they are falling out of path towards higher education. Just like the building, you can stand strong for years but you can remodel yourself at anytime when you feel like you are getting off track. That is what I felt throughout High School and continued staying motivated to remodel myself in order to reach higher education.
