My academic experience by Cesia - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Cesia Acosta, and as a high school senior, I have faced my share of academic challenges. One of the most significant experiences that tested my perseverance and determination was my struggle with physics during my junior year. Physics was a subject I was genuinely interested in, especially since it ties closely to my passion for mechanical and aerospace engineering. However, it was also a subject that did not come easily to me.

At the beginning of the year, I was excited to dive into the world of forces, motion, and energy, but soon found myself overwhelmed by the complexity of the concepts. My initial excitement gave way to frustration as I struggled to grasp the mathematical components and apply them to real-world problems. Despite my efforts, my grades in physics were not reflecting my dedication, and this was disheartening.

I realized that I needed to change my approach if I wanted to succeed. The first step I took was to acknowledge that I needed help. I reached out to my physics teacher, who was more than willing to offer extra help sessions after school. This was not easy for me, as I had always been fairly independent in my studies, but I knew it was necessary. These sessions provided me with a clearer understanding of the topics we covered in class and allowed me to ask questions in a more relaxed setting.

In addition to seeking help from my teacher, I also formed a study group with a few classmates. We met a couple of times a week to review our notes, work on problem sets, and quiz each other. This collaborative environment made learning more enjoyable and less isolating. We were all able to share our strengths and support each other through our weaknesses. I found that explaining concepts to others helped solidify my own understanding.

Another strategy I adopted was incorporating online resources into my study routine. I discovered several educational websites and videos that broke down complex physics concepts into more digestible parts. These visual aids were incredibly helpful, as they provided different perspectives on the material we were learning in class. I would often watch a video before tackling my homework assignments, which gave me the confidence to approach problems with a better understanding.

Time management also played a crucial role in overcoming this challenge. Balancing homework, extracurricular activities, and studying for physics required careful planning. I started using a planner to organize my time more effectively, ensuring that I dedicated specific slots for physics study without neglecting my other responsibilities. This not only helped reduce my stress levels but also ensured that I was consistently reviewing the material, rather than cramming before tests.

As the year progressed, I began to see improvements in my understanding and my grades. The hard work and dedication I put into mastering physics paid off. By the end of the year, I had not only improved my grade significantly but also developed a genuine appreciation for the subject. This experience taught me the importance of perseverance, seeking help, and using a variety of resources to tackle academic challenges.

Overcoming my struggle with physics has strengthened my resolve to pursue a major in mechanical or aerospace engineering. It has shown me that even when faced with difficulties, I have the ability to adapt and find solutions. I am excited to apply these lessons as I continue my education at one of the universities I am considering, such as Rowan University or Seton Hall University.

This experience has also reinforced my belief in the power of collaboration and the importance of supporting others in their academic journeys. As a Hispanic woman, I am aware of the challenges that can come with pursuing a career in engineering. I am committed to using my experiences to inspire and support others who may face similar obstacles.

In conclusion, my journey with physics was a challenging yet rewarding experience that taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, collaboration, and self-advocacy. These skills will undoubtedly serve me well as I transition into college and work towards my goal of becoming an engineer. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my story and hopeful for the future that lies ahead.
