Bridging Generations Through Connection by Chamael - June 2026 Scholarship Essay

If I could design a project to improve my school and community, I would create an Intergenerational Connections Program that pairs students with older adults in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and senior centers. The goal would be to build meaningful relationships between generations while reducing loneliness among seniors and providing valuable experiences for students.

This project would be especially meaningful to me because I helped care for my grandparents as they grew older. My grandmother lived with dementia, and my grandfather faced several health challenges later in life. Through those experiences, I learned how important companionship, patience, and support can be for older adults. Many seniors spend long periods of time alone, and even simple conversations can make a difference in their day.

Students would have the opportunity to visit seniors regularly, participate in activities, share stories, and learn from their experiences. The program could also benefit students who are interested in careers such as nursing, medicine, social work, psychology, and physical therapy. While textbooks can teach medical knowledge, spending time with older adults helps students develop empathy, communication skills, and a deeper understanding of the people they may serve in their future careers.

I believe both generations would benefit from these relationships. Seniors would gain companionship and social interaction, while students would gain wisdom, perspective, and valuable life experiences. Many older adults have lived through historical events and challenges that younger generations can learn from.

By creating an Intergenerational Connections Program, I would help strengthen community bonds and encourage greater understanding between generations. Sometimes making a positive impact does not require a large budget or complicated technology. Sometimes it starts with people simply taking the time to connect with one another.
