Beating Failure by Charisma - February 2017 Scholarship Essay
Failure, it’s what we all dislike to experience in our lives. I have failed many times, but this one memory of failing has always stayed with me. The little things such as; failing your friends on a night out, failing to show up to some doctors’ appointments, or failing to attend your best friend’s wedding, are the least to what I failed at doing. This is my story of failure, and how I turned things around.
High school graduation came in June 2007, I was an adult and I was off to college. College controlled my mind and it gave me a sense of popularity. I was 18 years old, and during that time I perceived that I was attending school to be cool, instead of looking forward to my future. Life happened and after one semester I failed three of my five classes. I ventured to continue on into another semester and my studies were just not clicking. I quit! After two semesters I was off into the workforce, making a little over minimum wage. I was content, until seven years later.
After the birth of my second child in 2013, at the age of 25, maturity hit. The kind of maturity that tells you, education is the key to success. I realized I had failed my own self by not giving me the education I needed. I was only cheating myself all these years since my high school graduation. I re applied for admissions at my local community college, re-took courses for better grades and completed my degree plan to earn my associates degree. For two straight semesters I received an honors recognition. In 2016, I graduated with my associates degree, but I did not stop there. Fall of 2016, I continued my education to pursue my bachelor’s degree at the University of the Incarnate Word. My first semester was very successful that I made the Dean’s list. I am currently in my second semester, and I will not stop until I achieve my dream.
I failed myself, by not properly educating myself and realizing the importance of completing college. I realized I couldn’t get anywhere in life without a higher degree. With two young children, times get extremely difficult. Thankfully I am strong enough now to continue to stay positive during my duration of my studies. I don’t want to fail again, I look back in the past, and it makes me strong for my future.
