When I think about challenging academic experiences, one particular moment stands out. It was my sophomore year in high school, and I was taking an advanced math class that was known for being tough. Math had always been a subject I enjoyed, but this class pushed me in ways I had not expected. The concepts were more abstract and required a deeper level of thinking and problem-solving than I was used to. I remember feeling overwhelmed and unsure of how to tackle the growing pile of assignments and upcoming tests.
The first few weeks were especially hard. I would spend hours on homework, only to find that I was not making much progress. My grades were not what I wanted them to be, and I began to doubt my ability to succeed. It was a humbling experience for someone who had always done well in math. I realized I needed to change my approach if I wanted to improve.
The first step I took was reaching out for help. I knew I could not do it alone, so I started attending after-school tutoring sessions. The math teacher, Mr. Moore, was incredibly patient and took the time to explain the concepts in a way that made more sense to me. He taught me to break down complex problems into smaller, more manageable parts. This approach helped me understand the material better and gave me the confidence to tackle difficult questions.
In addition to the tutoring sessions, I formed a study group with a few classmates. We would meet a couple times a week to go over homework and prepare for tests. I was no longer just memorizing formulas but actually understanding how and why they worked. This experience taught me the importance of perseverance and the value of seeking help when needed. It also showed me that it is okay to struggle and that challenges can lead to growth and improvement.

I have carried this lesson with me into other areas of my life, including my interest in civil engineering. I know that pursuing a degree in this field will present its own set of challenges, but I am confident in my ability to overcome them.

I am eager to attend either the University of South Carolina or Clemson University, where I believe I can further develop my skills and knowledge in civil engineering. Both schools offer strong programs that align with my career goals, and I am excited about the opportunities they provide for hands-on learning and research.
