The Classroom of 2020 by Corinna - January 2020 Scholarship Essay
The classroom of 2020 is large; it is filled with couches, hammocks, and regularly serves coffee. The classroom of 2020 is the breakroom of an office building, a kitchen table long after children have gone to bed, or the middle seat of an airplane. Because of technology, the classroom of 2020 is no longer confined to a college campus; it is confined only to the limits of the determination and dreams of the students that inhabit it.
As an adult student returning to college to finish my degree, continuing my education would not be an option without the advances of technology in the past several years. Earning a college degree online, which would have once been deemed impossible, and only a few short years ago laughable, is now common practice and opening countless doors. It takes determination and self-discipline, but I am now able to sustain my full-time, forty-hour a week job while pursuing my education. Just a few days ago, I met one of my professors face-to-face from the comfort of my living room - he showed me a picture of his kids! Connecting with classmates, seeking assistance and guidance on difficult assignments, and choosing to learn on my own time; technology is the stepping stone that is allowing me to change my own future each and every day.
Education is no longer only for those that have the means and the time - thanks to technology in the classroom, learning is more accessible and flexible than ever. Think of the lives that have been and will be changed in future because of this advancement; my life being one of them.
