Overcoming Finance Class by Craig - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
My journey through college has been a series of rewarding experiences, each with its own set of challenges. As a Sports Management major at Columbia International University, I have had the opportunity to delve into subjects that I am passionate about, learning the intricacies of the sports industry and how to manage its various components. However, one academic challenge stands out as a pivotal moment in my college career, testing my resolve and determination.
During my sophomore year, I enrolled in a course called Sports Finance, a class that many students found daunting due to its complex concepts and rigorous workload. I was eager to learn about the financial aspects of sports management, but I quickly realized that this course would require more effort than I initially anticipated. The first few weeks were overwhelming, as I struggled to grasp the financial terminology and mathematical calculations that were essential to understanding the material. It felt like I was in over my head, and I began to doubt my ability to succeed in the course.
The turning point came when I received my first exam grade. Despite my efforts, I had not performed as well as I had hoped. It was a wake-up call, and I knew I needed to change my approach if I wanted to improve. I realized that I had been trying to tackle the material on my own, without seeking help or utilizing the resources available to me. It was time to reassess my strategy.
First, I reached out to my professor, who was incredibly supportive and willing to help. I scheduled regular office hours with him, where I could ask questions and clarify concepts that were unclear to me. These sessions were invaluable, as they allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the material and build a rapport with my professor. He encouraged me to think critically and apply the concepts to real-world scenarios, which made the subject matter more relatable and less intimidating.
In addition to seeking help from my professor, I also formed a study group with some of my classmates. This collaboration was crucial, as it provided a space where we could share insights, discuss challenging topics, and learn from each other’s strengths. We met regularly to review lecture notes, work through problem sets, and prepare for exams. The group dynamic helped me stay motivated and accountable, and it was reassuring to know that I was not alone in facing the challenges of the course.
To further enhance my understanding, I sought out additional resources outside of the classroom. I found online tutorials and articles that explained financial concepts in a more digestible manner. These resources complemented my coursework and provided alternative perspectives that helped solidify my knowledge. I also began to follow sports finance news and trends, which allowed me to see how the concepts I was learning were applied in the real world. This not only made the material more interesting but also reinforced its relevance to my career goals.
As I continued to put in the effort, I noticed a significant improvement in my performance. My grades gradually increased, and I developed a newfound confidence in my ability to tackle challenging subjects. The experience taught me the importance of perseverance and the value of seeking help when needed. It also highlighted the power of collaboration and the benefits of utilizing a variety of resources to enhance learning.
Reflecting on this experience, I am grateful for the challenge it presented. It pushed me to step outside of my comfort zone and develop skills that will serve me well beyond the classroom. I learned that it is okay to struggle and that overcoming obstacles often requires humility and a willingness to adapt. This lesson has been instrumental in shaping my approach to academics and life in general.
As I move forward in my studies and future career, I carry with me the lessons learned from this challenging experience. I am more equipped to face new challenges with resilience and a proactive mindset. I am committed to continuing my education in sports management and making a positive impact in the field. The skills and knowledge I have gained through overcoming this academic challenge have prepared me to navigate the complexities of the sports industry and contribute to its growth and success.
In conclusion, facing and overcoming the challenges of the Sports Finance course was a defining moment in my college journey. It taught me the importance of persistence, collaboration, and utilizing available resources. These lessons will guide me as I pursue my passion for sports management and strive to make a meaningful contribution to the industry.
