Protect Your Smartphone if it Gets Stolen! by Daisy - January 2023 Scholarship Essay

"Why was I not taught this in school?" I wonder to myself. I am always on the search online, specifically on YouTube, TikTok, or Google to find how to work out my new advanced smartphone. I learned that I could prevent the usage of a stolen phone by toggling off my control center if my phone is locked! This way someone who picked up my phone would not be able to turn off my location if I lost it. There is also an option to keep the location available when the phone is turned off in the settings. I went to share this feature with my friends and then discovered that many of them knew this detail already. I really thought I did something there.

I tend to struggle on the side of technology and sometimes get teasing jokes that I am uncultured or computer illiterate. Personally, I do not get offended, as I am learning how to improve. Plus, it is a little humorous that I cannot seem to manage a device that is so common all over the place. Sometimes, I watch videos from creators who find interesting ways to modify their devices, such as laptops, keyboards, smart phones, and even their TI-84 calculators! It is so interesting to believe that we have a whole world of information at our fingertips, yet many people similar to myself are not aware of how to take that to the next level and truly grasp the technology.

This is why I believe that the more advanced technology becomes, the more required classes about these innovations should be. As someone who is surrounded by technology, it is important to understand how it works, how to use it, and how to improve it. It is oftentimes the gate to unlocking new information for ourselves. As someone who also grew up in a community lacking technology, it is also important to be made aware of what is happening in the world around us. While I may not have always had a smartphone, a laptop, or earbuds due to lack of resources, that did not mean I would not have appreciated a quick lesson on these catalysts that make life simpler.

Technology is such an impacting tool in our lives even if we may not see it. Therefore, ignoring it would be a sign of neglecting learning. Understanding how to shape technology into something useful to yourself is a form of connecting to the rest of the globe. It is crucial to accept the help of technology and truly know what it is in today's world. I have seen many students around me involved in robotics, engineering, physics clubs, and more. These extracurricular activities have two most prominent things in common; the use of technology and the ability to improve the world with innovation. This is why I believe that the extracurricular of these interesting fields should be turned into a class that teaches AND applies the use of technology in our everyday lives.

The name of this extracurricular class would be "Tech Teach."
