Damon west essay by Damon - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Damon West, and I am a sophomore at Fortis College, majoring in Other Trades/Crafts. As a Black man striving to succeed in higher education, I have encountered several challenges, but one academic experience truly tested my resolve and shaped who I am today. This experience was not just a hurdle; it was a lesson in perseverance and adaptability that I desperately needed to overcome.

In my first year, I enrolled in a course that was critical for my major. It was known for its tough curriculum and high standards, and I was eager to prove myself. But as the semester went on, I found myself struggling more than I ever expected. The technical language felt like a foreign world, and the hands-on projects seemed beyond my reach. I was falling behind, and it was crushing to see others grasping the material while I floundered.

The moment that shook me was receiving a low grade on a major project. It was a blow that left me questioning my abilities and my place in the program. I realized I could not continue down this path without making a change. I needed help, and I needed it fast.

Swallowing my pride, I reached out to my professor. This was difficult for me because I worried it might show I was not cut out for the course. But my professor was understanding and offered me guidance on how to break down the material into smaller, more manageable pieces. He encouraged me to focus on the basics before tackling the more complex topics.

I also decided to form a study group with classmates who were facing similar struggles. We met regularly, and these sessions became a lifeline. We shared notes, worked through problems together, and supported each other. Knowing I was not alone in this struggle made a huge difference and gave me the strength to keep pushing forward.

Moreover, I took advantage of the college's learning center. I attended workshops on time management and study skills, which helped me organize my study sessions better. I spent extra time in the lab, practicing the hands-on skills I needed. The more I practiced, the more my confidence grew.

Throughout this journey, I learned the true meaning of perseverance. There were moments when I felt like giving up, moments when switching courses seemed like the easier path. But I held onto my passion for my field and my dreams for the future. I realized that I needed to be adaptable and open to new strategies when my initial approach failed.

By the end of the semester, my efforts paid off. My grades improved, and I gained a solid understanding of the material. More importantly, I developed a resilience that I know will help me face future challenges. This experience taught me that obstacles are opportunities to grow, even when they feel insurmountable.

In conclusion, overcoming this academic challenge was a turning point in my college journey. It taught me the power of persistence and the importance of seeking help when I need it. As I continue my studies in Other Trades/Crafts, I carry these lessons with me, knowing they have made me stronger. I am grateful for this experience, as it has not only made me a better student but also a more determined person. I hope that with this scholarship, I can continue to pursue my dreams and overcome whatever challenges lie ahead.
