As a child, I never truly understood why my parents worked so much. For a long time, I felt neglected, as their work consumed them and became their life. Even at a young age, I knew that money was the deciding factor in shaping your life—determining what you could or couldn’t do. But you don’t truly understand the sacrifices until it’s your turn to be in that spot—feeling the weight of long hours and the constant pressure of financial strain.
I remember carefully managing every penny, trying to create tight and specific budgets so I wouldn’t add to the burden my parents already faced. During this time, I realized how important it is to understand money—not just to earn it but to manage it wisely. I began to see that it wasn’t about being infatuated with wealth; it was knowing how to handle money responsibly and effectively. This led me to dive deeper into the financial world. I wanted to learn more about economics, not just because money dictates so much of life but because I wanted to use it in a way that would allow me to break the cycle of financial struggle in my family. My goal was to ensure my parents could feel stable and secure while also building my path toward financial independence.
I was privileged to have early exposure to finance through various programs and units, which most students don't have the opportunity to experience. Elementary school was where my journey began, learning about taxes, paychecks, credit cards, and more. Eventually, I had the chance to explore career options through mock interviews, giving me a genuine feel for the process and adapting me to the professional world.
Many people are uncomfortable with money, and it's a topic that many avoid due to fear or embarrassment. I wanted to change that, not just for myself but for others as well. One of the most impactful experiences I had during these programs was a field trip to Biztown, where I was given the persona of having a job, paying taxes, and simulating adult life. I worked as an accountant at Mission Federal, and in the weeks leading up to it, I studied and learned the proper math for this role. This hands-on experience allowed me to apply the skills and knowledge I had gained in real life, and I found that I enjoyed it.
What drew me was the opportunity to help others with their finances. Being entrusted with something as serious as money and having the responsibility to manage it well was both challenging and rewarding. I enjoy working with people, and if I can help guide others through their money problems or advise them on financial matters, I want to be part of a team that spreads awareness and becomes a reliable figure for those in need.
My early experiences with finance have fueled my motivation and interest in this field, as money is essential in life, no matter how cliché that may sound. Business and accounting aren’t just interests; they are the path to my future goals and self-enrichment. By pursuing this degree, I aim to break the cycles of financial fear and strain I’ve seen in my family, ensuring that no one has to face these challenges alone. This major will equip me with the skills and knowledge necessary to build a stable future for myself and help others feel more confident and secure in managing their finances. Whether that’s through working for a company, starting my own business, or serving as a personal advisor, the possibilities are endless—and that, to me, is worth everything. I’m excited to combine my passion for financial literacy with my desire to be a trusted resource for others, guiding them toward stability.
