What Education Means to Me by Danica - October 2022 Scholarship Essay
To me, education is a privilege. As a child who grew up in a relatively rich area in suburban Pennsylvania, I took school for granted. Every day I woke up and I went to school. It was like clockwork. It didn't even occur to me until much later that there were children in many other parts of the world that did not get to get up and go to school every day. I learned how to read when I was three years old. As I grew older, I learned that other people were not as lucky as I was. They were not provided with the education system that I was, and some of them never even learned how to read.
As I sat in my algebra 2 class in my freshman year of high school, I stared at the board with disgust thinking that nobody would ever want to sit through a class like this, and kids who didn't have to go to school were lucky. Little did I know that those kids who didn't go to school would never get to have the same opportunities in life as I have now. I have opportunities to go to college and continue to learn in order to better myself and prepare myself for a career. Those other kids would be working either out in the field or at a very low-level job, most likely struggling because they did not grow up with the education I did.
I am glad that I grew up in the conditions that I did, and I am lucky to live in a society where I am allowed to go to school and learn and gain knowledge in order to have a better future.
