Gear to Share by Daniel - January 2017 Scholarship Essay

I started a community project I call Gear to Share, which works with Stow athletes to collect used sporting equipment and then I donated it all to a local non-profit organization. The August 2016 drive resulted in more than 75 items including soccer cleats, basketballs, shin guards, bike helmets, lacrosse pads, scooters and even a pogo-stick. My role was to develop the plan on how the equipment was going to be collected and delivered. The impact of this activity was and is priceless. I consider myself more educated, more confident and inspired to develop another project. The outcome of my project allows kids the opportunity and experience to either work toward their potential or to just have fun.

The goal of this project is to provide less fortunate kids the opportunity to play sports with equipment they would not normally have had available. It also allows these children to experience "the game" using authentic gear. I have played sports my entire life and have been lucky enough my parents were able to provide me with gear and the opportunity to play. I know there are many children who have not been as fortunate. I want them to experience being part of a team and being part of a community. The kids who have received pieces of equipment have been able to either use them at either the center or have been given an item to keep permanently.

My inspiration for this project has been my own experiences. I have played sports all my life and realized when I was cleaning the garage out both how lucky I am my parents could afford to keep me in youth sports and also how much nice equipment I have outgrown. It occurred to me other families are in the same situation and what a great way to give back. My mother works for Boston Public Schools and has seen so many kids with athletic potential unable to reach it because he/she did not either have access to equipment or the means to purchase. My energy soared when I dropped off the equipment and got to see the exact place where the donations were going (and even a few kids). It really inspired me and solidified I am doing a great deed.

As a result of this project I have definitely grown and continue to improve my leadership skills. I feel I have made a great impact on the community. My project has inspired me to continue its growth and to continue giving back to the community.
