Strive For Success: Recognizing Where to Start by Daniel - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
My name is Daniel Soto, and I am a freshman at Mercer University, majoring in Computer Science. As a first-generation college student from a Hispanic family, my journey through academia has been both exciting and challenging. One of the most significant academic challenges I faced was during my first semester in college. It was a period filled with adjustments, both academically and personally, and it tested my determination and resilience in ways I had not anticipated.
Coming from high school with a GPA of 3.3, I was used to a certain level of understanding and success in my studies. However, college was a different ballgame. The coursework was more demanding, and the pace was faster than what I was accustomed to. I found myself struggling particularly in my introductory programming class. Programming was something I was passionate about, but the complexity of the assignments and the need for a deeper understanding of concepts like algorithms and data structures were overwhelming at first.
My initial college GPA reflected this struggle, as it dropped to a 2.86. This was a wake-up call for me. I realized that I needed to change my approach to learning if I wanted to succeed in my chosen field. The first step I took was to acknowledge that I needed help. This was not easy for me, as I have always prided myself on being able to handle things on my own. However, I understood that seeking help was not a sign of weakness but a step towards improvement.
I began attending tutoring sessions offered by the university. The tutors were incredibly patient and helped me break down complex concepts into manageable parts. I also formed study groups with my classmates. Working with others allowed me to gain different perspectives on the material and helped me grasp concepts that I found challenging when studying alone. These sessions were not only beneficial academically but also helped me build a network of friends who were going through similar experiences.
Another strategy I adopted was improving my time management skills. In high school, I could get away with last-minute study sessions, but college required a more disciplined approach. I started using a planner to map out my weekly schedule, allocating specific times for studying, attending classes, and completing assignments. This structure helped me stay on top of my coursework and reduced the stress of looming deadlines.
Additionally, I reached out to my professors during office hours. Initially, I was hesitant to do this, fearing that I might come across as unprepared or incapable. However, I quickly learned that professors appreciate when students take the initiative to seek clarification and show a genuine interest in their subject. These interactions not only helped me understand the material better but also made me feel more connected to the academic community at Mercer.
Throughout this process, I learned the importance of perseverance and adaptability. There were times when I felt discouraged, but I reminded myself of why I chose to study computer science in the first place. I am passionate about technology and its potential to solve real-world problems. This passion kept me motivated even when the going got tough.
By the end of my first semester, I had not only improved my grades but also gained valuable skills that I will carry with me throughout my academic journey and beyond. I learned how to ask for help, manage my time effectively, and adapt to new challenges. These lessons have made me a more resilient student and have strengthened my resolve to succeed in my field.
Reflecting on this experience, I am grateful for the challenges I faced because they taught me more about myself and what I am capable of achieving. I am determined to continue improving and to make the most of the opportunities available to me at Mercer University. As I move forward, I am confident that the skills and resilience I have developed will serve me well, both in my studies and in my future career in computer science.
