Making a Difference In the Community by Danielle - January 2017 Scholarship Essay
All my life growing up, my passion was playing sports, the love for children and my religion. I am a three sport athlete and have been a starter on varsity since my freshman year. I love the game and all the aspects that go along with it. I am a very competitive player, I believe in teamwork and being a team player. My goal was always to buy my own car, and help kids to become someone like myself to look up to and respect. To reach that goal of mine, I babysat kids and saved my money to buy my own car when I turned 16. I coach basketball during summer school. One of the reasons I wanted to coach basketball, was to have an impact on them and help them become a player like myself. I teach the young children skills and help them become an improved basketball player. I also want to be a role model for these young kids to look up to. My goal is to give them a good role model to follow and for them to leave the camp noticing that their skills have improved since they started.
I make church and my faith a priority in my life. I am a Christian who attends church every Sunday, youth group on Wednesdays, involved with Mission 516 and have been on a mission trip to Toronto, Canada. We helped out Toronto community with many things. Our group painted at a house, and cleaned a van. I went to a camp with kids who were less fortunate than myself, where I was able to play and talk with them. We then went to a shelter where I prepared and served food to the homeless. For Mission 516, during the week we help out people in our own community. Some of the things we did was painted a fence and a shed, raked leaves, pulled weeds, carried bricks for a patio, and cleaned at a food pantry. We also got to go shopping for a family that was in need. As I was growing up, I had a friend who did not have God in their life and didn't have a family to show her who he was. For me, I believe it is important to know and have Christ in your life so I brought her to youth group with me on Wednesdays so she could read and learn about the bible.
I believe that I have used my talents to make a difference on my community. I feel that I have impacted the children at basketball camps, by being respectful and a role model for them. I also turned someone who didn’t know the lord into a follower of Christ. I have taken my love and passion for basketball, coaching, and my faith and started to impact the younger generations. For me that is such a good feeling knowing that I am impacting other people's life and making a difference in our community.
