Academic challenges by Danna - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Danna Ramirez, and I am a freshman at California State University, San Bernardino, majoring in Business Administration with a focus on Management, Economics, Finance, and Accounting. As a first-generation college student and a Hispanic woman, I have faced several challenges on my academic journey. One experience, in particular, stands out as a defining moment in my life, teaching me resilience and the importance of seeking support when needed.

During my senior year of high school, I faced a challenging academic experience that tested my perseverance and determination. Balancing multiple Advanced Placement (AP) courses while preparing college applications was overwhelming. The pressure to maintain a strong GPA, along with the desire to be accepted into a good college, felt like a constant weight on my shoulders. My high school GPA was 3.4, which I was proud of, but I knew I had to work hard to keep it up while aiming for college.

One of the most difficult classes I took was AP Calculus. Math had always been a subject I enjoyed, but calculus was different. It was more abstract and required a deeper level of understanding. I found myself struggling to keep up with the pace of the class, and my grades started slipping. This was disheartening because I had always prided myself on being a good student. I began to doubt my abilities and wondered if I was cut out for college-level work in business, which heavily relies on math.

The turning point came when I realized that I could not do it alone. I had always been independent in my studies, but I understood that it was okay to ask for help. I reached out to my calculus teacher and expressed my concerns. She was incredibly supportive and suggested that I attend after-school tutoring sessions. These sessions were a game-changer for me. They provided a space where I could ask questions without feeling embarrassed and work through problems at my own pace.

In addition to tutoring, I formed a study group with a few classmates who were also struggling. We met regularly to review material, share insights, and motivate each other. This collaborative effort made a significant difference. I learned that sometimes, the best way to overcome a challenge is to lean on others and share the burden.

Another important lesson I learned during this time was the importance of time management. Juggling AP courses, extracurricular activities, and college applications required me to become more organized and disciplined. I started using a planner to keep track of assignments and deadlines, breaking tasks into smaller, manageable parts. This helped me stay on top of my work and reduced my stress levels.

Through hard work, determination, and the support of my teacher and peers, I was able to improve my calculus grade. More importantly, I regained my confidence in my academic abilities. This experience taught me that challenges are not roadblocks but opportunities to grow and learn. It reinforced my belief in the power of perseverance and the importance of seeking help when needed.

Now, as a college student majoring in Business Administration, I carry these lessons with me. The fields of Management, Economics, Finance, and Accounting are demanding, but I am prepared to face any obstacles that come my way. I know that I have the skills and the support system to succeed. I am determined to make the most of my college experience and to use my education to make a positive impact in my community.

Being a first-generation college student is a source of pride for me, but it also comes with its own set of challenges. I am navigating uncharted territory, but I am not alone.
