How HighSchool made me who i am by Darwin - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
Throughout my high school journey, I have encountered various academic challenges, but one experience stands out as particularly significant. This challenge not only tested my academic abilities but also my resilience and determination. It taught me valuable lessons that I carry with me as I prepare to pursue a career in nursing at Prairie State College.
During my junior year, I enrolled in an Advanced Placement Biology course. I was excited about the opportunity to deepen my understanding of the sciences, as I have always been passionate about pursuing a career in the medical field. However, I quickly realized that the course was much more demanding than I had anticipated. The pace was fast, the material was complex, and the workload was intense. I found myself struggling to keep up, and my grades began to slip. This was a significant blow to my confidence, as I had always been a diligent student with a solid academic record.
The turning point came after I received a low grade on a major exam. I felt discouraged and began to question my abilities and my future in the medical field. However, I realized that giving up was not an option. I needed to find a way to overcome this obstacle and prove to myself that I could succeed.
I started by reassessing my study habits. I realized that my previous methods were not effective for this level of coursework. I reached out to my teacher for advice, and she suggested that I form a study group with my classmates. This was a game changer for me. Working with my peers allowed me to gain different perspectives on the material and to learn collaboratively. We held each other accountable and motivated one another to push through the difficult parts of the course.
In addition to the study group, I made use of online resources and educational videos to supplement my learning. These tools helped me to grasp complex concepts that I struggled with in class. I also began to manage my time more effectively, setting aside specific periods each day dedicated solely to biology. This consistent practice helped reinforce my understanding and retention of the material.
Another crucial step in overcoming this challenge was learning to ask for help. I had always been somewhat hesitant to seek assistance, fearing it might be seen as a sign of weakness. However, I discovered that reaching out for help was actually a strength. My teacher was incredibly supportive, offering extra help sessions after school and providing additional resources to aid my learning. Her encouragement and belief in my abilities gave me the confidence to persevere.
As I worked through these challenges, I learned the importance of resilience and adaptability. I realized that setbacks are a natural part of the learning process and that they do not define my capabilities or my future. Instead, they provide opportunities for growth and improvement. This experience taught me to embrace challenges and to view them as stepping stones toward achieving my goals.
By the end of the course, my hard work paid off. I saw a significant improvement in my grades, and I performed well on the AP exam. More importantly, I gained a deeper understanding of biology and a renewed passion for the subject. This experience reinforced my desire to pursue a career in nursing, where I can apply my knowledge and skills to help others.
Looking back, I am grateful for the challenges I faced in AP Biology. They prepared me for the rigors of college and the demands of a nursing program. I am now more confident in my ability to tackle difficult situations and to persevere in the face of adversity. I am excited to bring this resilience and determination with me to Prairie State College, where I hope to continue my journey toward becoming a nurse.
In conclusion, the academic challenge I faced in my AP Biology class was a pivotal moment in my high school career. It taught me valuable lessons about resilience, collaboration, and the importance of seeking help when needed. These lessons have shaped me into a more determined and capable student, ready to take on the challenges of college and beyond. I am eager to apply these skills and experiences to my studies in nursing, where I hope to make a positive impact in the lives of others.
