Why Me by David - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is David Tyner, and I am a high school senior excited about the possibility of attending college to study engineering. I have always been curious about how things work and how they are built, which is why I am interested in Civil and Mechanical Engineering. However, my journey through high school has not been without its challenges, especially when it comes to academics.

One of the most challenging academic experiences I faced was during my junior year in high school. I had always found math to be a bit difficult, but I knew it was important for my future in engineering. My math grades were not where I wanted them to be, and I was struggling to keep up with the material. My GPA was a 2.9, and I knew that if I wanted to pursue engineering in college, I needed to improve my understanding and performance in math.

The turning point came when I received a particularly low grade on a math test. I felt disappointed and frustrated, but I also realized that I needed to change my approach. I could not just sit back and hope that things would get better on their own. I had to take action.

First, I reached out to my math teacher for help. I explained my struggles and asked for guidance on how to improve. My teacher was very supportive and suggested that I attend after-school tutoring sessions. I started going to these sessions twice a week, where I received one-on-one help. The extra practice and explanations helped me understand the concepts better.

Additionally, I formed a study group with a few classmates who were also having trouble with math. We met once a week to go over homework, prepare for tests, and help each other with difficult problems. Working with my peers made a big difference because we could share different ways of solving problems and learn from each other. It also made studying more enjoyable and less stressful.

I also started using online resources to supplement my learning. I found educational videos and practice problems that helped me grasp the material more thoroughly. I dedicated extra time each day to work on math, even if it was just for 30 minutes. This consistent practice helped reinforce what I was learning in class and tutoring.

Over time, I noticed my grades improving. I was more confident in class and was able to participate in discussions and answer questions. This experience taught me the importance of perseverance and seeking help when needed. It also showed me that I am capable of overcoming challenges if I am willing to put in the effort.

Looking back, I am grateful for this challenging experience because it prepared me for the future. As I look forward to studying engineering at college, I know that there will be difficult courses and moments when I might feel overwhelmed. However, I have learned that with determination, support from others, and the right resources, I can succeed.

My journey through high school has not been perfect, but it has shaped me into a student who is ready to take on the challenges of college. I am excited about the opportunity to study Civil or Mechanical Engineering at a university like Grambling State University, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, or any of the other great schools I am considering. I am eager to learn more about how to design and build structures that can improve our communities and make a positive impact on the world.

In conclusion, overcoming my struggles in math was a pivotal moment in my academic journey. It taught me valuable lessons about resilience, teamwork, and the importance of seeking help. These lessons will stay with me as I move forward into college and beyond. I am committed to continuing my education and pursuing my passion for engineering, and I am confident that I can overcome any obstacles that come my way.
