Practice Makes Perfect! by Dawn - April 2019 Scholarship Essay
Like any other normal student, have endured challenges regarding my academics. It is extremely easy to get discouraged when it seems like you’ll never overcome the obstacles that stop you from performing your best on a test, paper, or any other type of assignment. However, I do my best to not let these obstacles stop me from still attempting to perform my best. That is because over the years, I have become more acquainted with how my brain works and how I can maximize my ability to absorb and retain information. I’ve formulated a few ways to not only help me improve my comprehension of a subject, but to also motivate me to keep learning despite my own blunders. The strategy for studying and retaining information that I would say is most crucial is repetition. I am a believer of the old proverb that states practice makes perfect. When I am stuck on a concept, I find several practice problems to do until I can better grasp the skill. Another skill I find that best aids my ability to learn is to erase distractions. Although it’s possible for me to focus with outside noise, most times, I can be easily distracted; that can be very problematic during exam seasons or when I have a test around the corner. When I am doing homework or studying, I have to be as honed in as possible, which is why I have to isolate myself from my peers so that I can fully commit myself to my work. I know that I cannot fully focus when I am also juggling conversations with my friends. Those are two of the main strategies I utilize to keep me focused and prepared for whatever challenges may come in between me and academic success.
