Overcoming Challenges by Deandra - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

When I look back on my high school years at Whittier High School, one academic challenge stands out as particularly transformative. It was during my freshman year in an biology class, a subject that initially seemed daunting but ultimately became a pivotal experience in my educational journey.

Biology is a subject that is foundational for many fields I am interested in, such as pre-med and kinesiology. However, during the first few weeks of class, I found myself struggling to keep up with the pace and complexity of the material. The concepts of cellular respiration, genetics, and ecosystems were overwhelming, and I felt lost during lectures. My confidence took a hit, and my grades reflected my struggle.

The turning point came after I received a disappointing grade on my first major exam. I realized that I needed to change my approach if I wanted to succeed. I decided to take a step back and reassess how I was engaging with the material. I knew that I had to be proactive and resourceful to overcome this challenge.

First, I reached out to my teacher for help. This was not easy for me, as I was used to figuring things out on my own, but I knew I needed guidance. My teacher was incredibly supportive and suggested that I attend after-school tutoring sessions. This extra time with my teacher helped me grasp the fundamental concepts that I had been struggling with in class.

Additionally, I formed a study group with a few classmates. We met twice a week to review notes, discuss challenging topics, and quiz each other. This collaborative environment made learning more engaging and less intimidating. I found that explaining concepts to my peers helped reinforce my understanding, and their insights often clarified things I had not fully grasped.

I also began utilizing online resources, such as educational videos and interactive quizzes, to supplement my learning. These tools allowed me to study at my own pace and revisit topics as needed. I found that visual aids, in particular, were incredibly helpful in understanding complex biological processes.

As I dedicated more time and effort to mastering the material, I noticed a gradual improvement in my comprehension and grades. The hard work paid off when I received an A on my next exam. This achievement boosted my confidence and reaffirmed my belief that perseverance and resourcefulness can help overcome academic challenges.

This experience taught me several valuable lessons. I learned the importance of seeking help and not being afraid to ask questions. I discovered the power of collaboration and how working with others can enhance learning. Most importantly, I realized that challenges are opportunities for growth and that with determination and the right strategies, I can overcome obstacles.

This journey in biology has inspired me to pursue a career in fields that require a deep understanding of science, such as pre-med or kinesiology. It has also sparked an interest in journalism, as I have developed a passion for communicating complex ideas in an accessible way. I am excited about the possibility of attending a university that will allow me to explore these interests further, whether it be at Columbia University, USC, UCLA, San Diego State University, or Pepperdine University.

As a Hispanic woman, I am proud to bring my unique perspective and determination to my future studies. I believe that my background and experiences will contribute to a diverse and enriching academic community. My GPA of 3.83 reflects my dedication to my education, and I am eager to continue challenging myself and growing as a student.

In conclusion, overcoming the challenge in my biology class was a defining moment in my high school career. It taught me resilience, the value of seeking support, and the benefits of collaboration. These lessons will undoubtedly guide me as I pursue higher education and work towards my career goals. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my story and hope to inspire others facing similar challenges.
