Santiago's Journey by Deasy - April 2014 Scholarship Essay

The Alchemist has the message to follow your heart and search for your dreams. Santiago, the main character, starts off in Spain as a shepherd boy having vivid dreams about finding a hidden treasure in Egypt. He consults a dream teller who by his surprise tells him to go in search of the treasure, his treasure.
At first he thought she was insane but as other people were advising him the same; he decided to pursue his dream.

During Santiago's trajectory he encounter many problems.. he had been beaten and robbed, left with nothing. Luckily for Santiago he found a job where e learned a lot, and within a year he was a rich man. After that year he went on to continue pursuing his dream, during one of his stops he met a young girl named Fatima whom he fell in love with. And so... he continued his journey leaving Fatima behind. As he got to the pyramids there was no treasure. During his digging to find the treasure , some thief's beat him to steal his money, but as Santiago told them about his dream, they left him alone. One thief now was sharing his own dream with Santiago, that his treasure laid in Spain, by a sycamore tree. The same place where Santiago lived. Santiago went back and found the treasure. But he also went back to all the places he had been, specifically back to Fatima the love of his life. Santiago not only found the physical treasure, but he found love and knowledge along the way. Some can even argue that love and knowledge obtained through out his journey were indeed the greatest treasure.
