The Deadlines of Deadlines by Delando - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
One academic challenge I have faced is managing deadlines. In the past, I often found myself overwhelmed by assignments piling up, especially when I underestimated how much time I needed to complete them. This led to unnecessary stress and occasional last-minute efforts that didn’t reflect the quality of work I was capable of producing. I realized that if I wanted to succeed academically, I needed to change how I approached deadlines.
To overcome this challenge, I developed the habit of starting tasks as soon as they were assigned. Instead of waiting until the due date was closer, I broke the work into smaller, manageable steps and tackled them one at a time. For example, if I had a research paper due in two weeks, I would spend the first couple of days gathering sources, the next few days outlining, and then drafting and editing over the remaining time. This approach not only reduced the pressure but also allowed me to produce better-quality work because I had time to review and improve it.
I also began using organizational tools like planners and apps to keep track of assignments and deadlines. By writing everything down and setting reminders, I could visualize my workload and plan my time more effectively. These tools helped me stay on top of my responsibilities and avoid the stress of forgetting important tasks.
Another strategy I adopted was prioritization. I learned to identify which assignments needed immediate attention and which could wait. By focusing on high-priority tasks first, I avoided the trap of spending too much time on less critical work and falling behind on bigger projects. This mindset shift made a big difference in how I managed my time.
Over time, these habits became second nature, and meeting deadlines felt much more achievable. I realized that tackling tasks early not only improved my academic performance but also gave me more free time to relax and enjoy other activities. This balance made my overall experience as a student much more positive.
This experience taught me the importance of time management and self-discipline. By addressing my struggles with deadlines head-on, I not only improved my academic outcomes but also developed skills that will benefit me in many areas of life.
