Embracing my Learning Journey by Dylan - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

Title: Embracing My Learning Journey: Overcoming Academic Challenges with ADHD

As a freshman at Texas State University, I was excited to dive into my Sound Recording Technology major and begin my college journey. However, my first semester presented unexpected academic challenges that tested my resilience and adaptability. I found myself struggling to keep up with coursework, despite my best efforts. This experience ultimately led me to advocate for myself and discover that I have ADHD, a revelation that has since transformed my approach to learning.

During high school, I maintained a solid GPA of 3.5, and I felt prepared for the transition to college. However, once classes began, I quickly realized that the demands of college-level coursework were different from what I had experienced before. I had difficulty focusing during lectures, organizing my assignments, and managing my time effectively. No matter how hard I tried, I could not seem to keep up with the pace, and my grades began to suffer.

At first, I attributed these struggles to the typical adjustment period that many freshmen experience. I tried various strategies, like creating detailed schedules and reducing distractions while studying, but nothing seemed to work. As the semester progressed, my frustration grew, and I began to question my abilities.

The turning point came when I decided to seek help. I reached out to my primary care doctor and shared my concerns about my performance and the difficulties I was facing. He listened attentively and suggested that I get tested for ADHD. This was a crucial step in my journey, as it marked the beginning of my self-advocacy.

I underwent a series of assessments that ultimately led to a diagnosis of ADHD. This revelation was both surprising and relieving. It provided an explanation for the challenges I had been facing and opened the door to new strategies and resources to support my learning.

With my diagnosis in hand, I began researching strategies that have worked for others like me. I began using tools like planners and digital apps to better organize my tasks and manage my time. I also explored techniques to improve my focus, such as breaking assignments into smaller, manageable parts and using timers to maintain concentration during study sessions.

Additionally, I took advantage of the resources available through the university's disability services, which provided accommodations such as extended time on exams and access to lecture notes. These adjustments made a significant difference in my ability to succeed academically.

As I implemented these strategies, I noticed a gradual improvement in my performance. My grades began to reflect my efforts, and I felt more confident in my ability to manage my coursework. This experience taught me the importance of self-advocacy and seeking support when faced with challenges.

Discovering that I have ADHD has been a transformative experience. It has not only helped me overcome academic hurdles but also deepened my understanding of myself as a learner. I have learned to embrace my unique way of processing information and to view my challenges as opportunities for growth.

As I continue my studies at Texas State University, I am committed to using the tools and strategies I have gained to thrive academically. My experience has reinforced the importance of perseverance and the value of advocating for oneself. It has also strengthened my resolve to pursue a career in sound recording technology, where I can use my creativity and passion to connect with others.

In conclusion, my first semester of college presented significant academic challenges, but it also led to a pivotal discovery about myself. By advocating for my needs and embracing my ADHD diagnosis, I have transformed my approach to learning and gained valuable skills that will serve me throughout my academic and professional journey. I am grateful for this experience and excited to continue exploring the world of sound recording with newfound confidence and determination.
