Teacher Vs Student by Ebony - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My Junior year of high school my English teacher gave me a very challenging time in his class. Our first essay assignment was over the book "The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne." For this essay assignment all students were required to write a thoughtful summary over the book and share connections you made throughout the course of reading the book. In my essay, I included a religious connection to the book and this really triggered my teacher but, at the time I didn't know this. After we got our essays back, my final grade for the essay was a failing grade. After he passes out the graded essays he starts to pass out these flyers from the ministry he goes to and invites us to come. At the time, I did not make the assumption that he failed me for the assignment because I have different religious practices. I only started to notice this was the reasoning because I continued to fail every essay assignment I've had and from pass academic years i'm known to be a profound writer so, it was very suspicious as to how i'm failing every essay assignment. Me being a concerned scholar I decided to go visit the teacher during his lunch hour to discuss the issue. He was being very hostile towards the situation and continued to hint to the point that maybe I need to expand on my writing skills. I took his advice until, when I get up to walk away he says " Grab another flyer come visit the church and chuckles." I refused to continue to fail my course for a different belief system so, the next morning I went to the principal and brung up the inappropriate behavior the teacher has been concluding in class and I also gave him copies of every essay I wrote in class to read and go over to see if it was worthy of a failing grade compared to the other students who received failing grades. After reviewing the essays the teacher was called in for a meeting and he was never seen again at the school and my grades were rightfully changed to the proper grades I deserved and so were other students who spoke on behalf of the same situations happening to them. This was a very challenging academic year and experience for me but I overcame all the situations.
