My future aspirations by Eden - June 2023 Scholarship Essay
My name is Eden Combs, I am 19 and am from Compton, California. I attend North Carolina A&T and will be a sophomore this fall. I have always envisioned myself being a successful businesswoman. During my four years of high school, I was in a specialized pathway known as CIC, The Center for International Curriculum. This program emphasizes AP and college classes with a global focus woven throughout the courses. That experience helped me to choose my current major in International Business Management. Ranked #63 in best business schools by U.S. News and World report, NCAT’s Desse Business College offers well-rounded and rigorous classes that will give me all the tools I need to succeed. It offers not only classroom learning but also the opportunity for internships in the summer with many thriving companies around the country. I know that, with a degree and the experience from the internships, I will excel in the business world.
After graduation, I intend to gain experience working for an international company so that, in ten years, I can use that knowledge to start my own international business. My dream is to create a transportation company that employs only women to provide rides for other women. There is an apprehension that women have, which men don’t have to consider when getting in a car with strangers. That sense of vulnerability, at the least, can cause fear, and at the worst can prohibit some women from traveling. I, along with other women I know, have felt uncomfortable many times being driven by men. According to researchers from Condor Ferries, 84% of solo travelers are female, with 64% traveling to another country, so the need for reliable and safe transportation is critical. I want to create a well-run and respected company known around the world for providing a safe ride for these women. I believe that any business should serve people in multiple ways. Not only will my business help women feel better about getting to their destinations, but it would also create more jobs for women all around the world. As a woman of color, I believe in providing opportunities for women to be empowered and self-sufficient. By 29, I would hope to have established the business in the United States and begin to take it internationally, specifically starting in Canada, Europe, and Asia.
When I think about my dream I believe it is realistic. I know that I will have learned tools through school and work experience, that will help me succeed and I know that it would be fulfilling to create a business that assists women and helps them feel safe while traveling. While I can’t see the future or control how life goes, I will work towards this dream, knowing I have all I need to see it become a reality.
