My First Semester by Egypt - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
My first semester at North Carolina State University was a whirlwind of new experiences, but it was not without its challenges. Coming from a tight-knit community, the transition to a large university was daunting. I was excited to start my journey as a Psychology major, but I soon found myself overwhelmed by the sheer volume of work and the pace of college life. One class, in particular, Introduction to Psychology, was both fascinating and intimidating. The material was dense, and the expectations were high. I knew I had to adapt quickly to succeed.
The first few weeks were tough. I struggled to keep up with the reading assignments and felt lost during lectures. It seemed like everyone around me was grasping the concepts effortlessly, while I was drowning in information. My confidence took a hit, and I began to doubt my ability to succeed in my chosen field. I realized that I needed to change my approach if I wanted to thrive in this new environment.
The turning point came after our first midterm exam. Despite my efforts, I did not do as well as I had hoped. I felt disheartened, but I knew I could not give up. I decided to seek help and make some changes. First, I reached out to my professor during office hours. This was a big step for me because I had always been hesitant to ask for help, fearing it would make me seem less capable. However, my professor was incredibly supportive and offered valuable advice on how to approach the material. She encouraged me to focus on understanding the concepts rather than just memorizing facts.
