After my first year in middle school the thought of why it was challenging to learn at the same pace as the rest of the class baffled me. At the beginning of my junior year in high school, I decided I would alter the established way of thinking and create my own path. To achieve this, I produced timelines to complete assignments at my own pace, resulting in being ahead of my peers. This worked well until, nearing the end of the school year, I remained several assignments ahead just as I had been for most of the year. My teacher, who had been observing my behavior for some time, instructed me to slow down. I didn't fully understand the reason behind the request but being a good student, I considered the feedback. Once I had decided that slowing down would negatively impact my work flow, I rejected the feedback and continued learning at my own speed but submitted assignments closer to their due date giving the impression I had slowed down.
Reflecting on this situation, a better course of action would have been to meet with my teacher and explain the reasons for my early timeline and work to understand her point of view. Through my experience in balancing cohesive environments in relationships, my principles now highlight the importance of engaging in conversations of varying comfort as they may lead you to a clearer and enlightened path.
