Determined! by Ella Grace - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My parents say that starting at the of three, me and my soccer ball were inseparable. They said I had a natural talent for the sport, and I do remember at a very young age truly looking forward to practice and games. Once kindergarten started, and routine vision tests began, I was diagnosed with a serve astigmatism in my left eye. Intense glasses were created for me, and I continued playing the sport I love. As I grew older, soccer became more intense and competitive. Unfortunately, my glasses, my lifeline, quickly became a hindrance to the intensity the sport required. In third grade my Optometrist broached the idea of contacts with my parents. Not just regular contact lenses, but specialized, customized lenses with my astigmatism prescription. As you can imagine, they were very expensive. My parents, both being public school teachers, know the importance of sports in youth, so they found a way. I remember in detail eagerly awaiting their arrival, and finally the day came! My Optometrist was so very patient with me while teaching me how to put them in- I was in third grade- but I finally got it! When I tell you that at that moment my life changed, I am not exaggerating one bit! They were and are amazing!! I am seventeen now, a high school Senior, and I have never stopped playing my beloved sport of soccer! Because of my Optometrist, because she was will to be unconventional and take a risk, I have decided to do the same! My plan is to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Biology, then get my Master's degree from The Southern School of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee. I want to change lives like mine was changed! I want to help remove or decrease vision hinderances for others so they can have the best life possible! I truly cannot wait!! Thank you for reading my story, and for considering me as a recipient for your scholarship. I promise you, I will become the best Pediatric Optometrist available to all!
