Overcoming Academic Challenges by Emily - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

As a freshman at Liberty University majoring in music, I have faced my fair share of academic challenges. One experience that stands out is the struggle I had with music theory during my first semester. Music theory is a fundamental part of my studies, but it was initially a subject I found daunting. The complex concepts and the precision required were overwhelming at first, and I quickly realized that I needed to find a way to overcome this challenge if I wanted to succeed in my major.

The first few weeks of my music theory class were particularly tough. I remember sitting in the lecture hall, listening to my professor explain scales, chords, and harmonic progressions, and feeling completely lost. Despite my passion for music, I found it difficult to translate the abstract concepts into something tangible. My initial confusion was compounded by the fast pace of the course, and I began to worry about my ability to keep up.

Realizing that I needed to take action, I decided to approach the challenge head-on. The first step I took was to seek help from my professor. I scheduled a meeting during office hours and explained my struggles. My professor was incredibly supportive and offered me additional resources to help me grasp the material better. He suggested some supplementary books and online tutorials that could provide different perspectives on the topics we were covering in class.

In addition to seeking help from my professor, I also formed a study group with a few classmates who were experiencing similar difficulties. We met regularly to review lecture notes, work on assignments, and quiz each other on key concepts. This collaborative approach was incredibly beneficial, as it allowed us to learn from each other and fill in any gaps in our understanding. The study group became a source of encouragement and motivation, and it was reassuring to know that I was not alone in my struggles.

To further reinforce my learning, I dedicated extra time each week to practice music theory exercises. I set aside specific hours in my schedule for focused study sessions, during which I would work through problems and practice ear training. This consistent practice helped to build my confidence and improve my comprehension of the material. Over time, I began to notice a gradual improvement in my ability to analyze and understand music theory concepts.

Another strategy that proved helpful was connecting the theoretical concepts to practical applications. As a music major, I had the opportunity to play various instruments and participate in ensembles. I started to apply the music theory I was learning to my performances, which made the concepts more relevant and easier to grasp. By seeing how the theory influenced the music I was playing, I developed a deeper appreciation for its importance and utility.

Through perseverance and a willingness to seek help and collaborate with others, I was able to overcome the challenge of music theory. By the end of the semester, I had not only improved my understanding of the subject but also achieved a grade that I was proud of. More importantly, I gained valuable skills in problem-solving and self-advocacy that will serve me well throughout my academic journey and beyond.

Reflecting on this experience, I realize that overcoming academic challenges is about more than just improving grades. It is about developing resilience, learning to adapt, and finding ways to turn obstacles into opportunities for growth. This experience taught me the importance of seeking support when needed and the power of collaboration and consistent practice.

As I continue my studies in music, I am grateful for the lessons I learned from this challenging experience. It has given me the confidence to tackle future challenges with a positive attitude and a strategic approach. I am committed to applying these lessons not only in my academic pursuits but also in my personal and professional life.

In conclusion, facing and overcoming the challenge of music theory has been a transformative experience for me. It has strengthened my resolve to succeed in my chosen field and has equipped me with the tools to face future challenges with determination and resilience. I am excited to continue my journey at Liberty University, knowing that I have the skills and mindset needed to overcome any academic obstacles that come my way.
