As a Junior at Rutgers University majoring in Public Health, I have faced a number of academic challenges, but one experience stands out as particularly formative. During my freshman year, I enrolled in an introductory statistics course that was known for being rigorous. I had always been more comfortable with subjects that involved writing and discussion, so I knew that tackling a math-heavy course would be a significant challenge for me. However, I did not anticipate just how demanding it would be.

From the very first class, I felt overwhelmed. The pace was fast, and the material was unlike anything I had encountered in high school. Concepts like probability distributions and hypothesis testing seemed abstract and impenetrable. I struggled to keep up with the lectures and found myself spending long hours on homework that seemed to take forever to complete. My first exam score was disappointing, and I began to worry that I might not pass the course.

This was a pivotal moment for me. I realized that I needed to change my approach if I wanted to succeed. The first step I took was to seek help. I started attending office hours regularly, where I could ask questions and get clarification on topics I did not understand. The professor was approachable and patient, and these sessions helped me gain a clearer understanding of the material.

In addition to office hours, I joined a study group with some classmates. This turned out to be incredibly beneficial. Working with peers allowed me to see different perspectives on solving problems, and we were able to support each other when one of us was struggling. Explaining concepts to others also reinforced my own understanding and boosted my confidence.

I also made use of online resources. I found websites and videos that explained statistical concepts in simpler terms, which helped me grasp the material more effectively. These resources were invaluable for reviewing topics before exams and solidifying my understanding.

Time management became another critical factor. I realized that I needed to allocate more time to this course than I had initially planned. I set up a study schedule that prioritized statistics, ensuring that I dedicated consistent, focused time each week to review notes, complete assignments, and prepare for exams. This disciplined approach helped me stay on top of the coursework and reduced my stress levels.

As the semester progressed, I started to see improvement. My homework scores increased, and I performed better on the next exam. This was a turning point for me, as it showed that my efforts were paying off. I learned the importance of persistence and resilience in the face of academic challenges.

By the end of the semester, I had not only passed the course but had developed a newfound appreciation for statistics. This experience taught me that stepping out of my comfort zone and tackling difficult subjects head-on could lead to personal growth and academic success. It also reinforced my interest in Public Health, as I realized how crucial statistical analysis is in understanding and addressing public health issues.

This challenging academic experience has had a lasting impact on me. It taught me the value of seeking help and collaborating with others, as well as the importance of effective time management and utilizing available resources. These lessons have been instrumental in my subsequent studies and have prepared me for future challenges in my academic and professional journey.

Reflecting on this experience, I am grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow. It has made me a more resilient and resourceful student, qualities that will serve me well as I continue my studies in Public Health. I am committed to applying these skills to contribute positively to the field and to make a difference in the communities I hope to serve in the future.
