How to beneficially remove distracting students from the regular classroom by Erica - July 2018 Scholarship Essay

If I was student body president, I would propose to positively impact my school by removing distracting and misbehaving students from regular classrooms by placing them in a classrooms that are better suited for this types of students. These classrooms for distracting or misbehaving students would have more staff whose focus would be on both the students’ education as well as their inappropriate behaviors. With a higher staff-to-student ratio and a dual focus on education and behavior, this practice should accomplish two goals: students with good behaviors can stay on task in the classroom and continue to learn with fewer distractions and students removed from the classroom can learn while receiving extra attention on their behavioral issues.
Although this strategy may sound similar to an “in school suspension” program, it is different because it addresses both behavioral and educational issues simultaneously. These classrooms would have both teachers and counselors skilled in behavioral problems. This will allow for one-on-one time between the counselor and the student, with the goal of solving the problem of why the student was sent to this classroom originally. This practice also allows teachers to have one-on-one time with the students, hopefully catching up on missing assignments, advancing on trouble spots in learning, and working on current assignments.
My hope with this practice of removing distracting or misbehaving students from regular classrooms is to allow all students to continue learning without even the smallest distractions. This proposal should be very important in High School classrooms since the curriculum is fast paced and time lost to distractions is invaluable. This proposed practice will prevent well behaved students from falling behind and missing important information due to distractions from misbehaving students. Additionally, this will help misbehaving students from missing educational time due to standard ‘in school suspension’ where no education is given during the suspension.
