Overcoming Challenges: My Journey by Erica - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

Through Advanced Calculus

As I reflect on my high school journey, one of the most challenging academic experiences I faced was my Advanced Calculus class during junior year. This course was notorious for its difficulty, and I knew it would be a tough ride. However, I was determined to take on the challenge, believing it would prepare me well for college and my future career in business, where analytical and problem-solving skills are essential.

From the very first day, Advanced Calculus was overwhelming. The pace was fast, and the concepts were far more complex than anything I had encountered before. I remember sitting in class, feeling lost as my teacher introduced derivatives and integrals. The symbols on the board seemed like a foreign language, and I quickly realized that my usual study habits would not suffice.

Initially, I struggled to keep up with the homework assignments and often found myself spending hours on problems without making much progress. My confidence took a hit, and I began to doubt my abilities. I knew I needed to find a way to overcome these challenges, not only to succeed in the class but also to prove to myself that I could handle difficult situations.

The first step I took was to seek help. I reached out to my teacher and asked for extra help after class. This was not easy for me, as I had always been an independent learner. However, I realized that asking for help was a strength, not a weakness. My teacher was incredibly supportive and took the time to explain concepts in a way that made more sense to me. These sessions were invaluable and gave me a better understanding of the material.

In addition to seeking help from my teacher, I formed a study group with a few classmates. We met twice a week to review the material and work through difficult problems together. This group became a crucial part of my learning process. We shared different perspectives and problem-solving techniques, which helped me see the material in new ways. Collaborating with my peers taught me that learning is often more effective when done together.

I also made changes to my study habits. I started dedicating specific blocks of time each day to calculus, ensuring I reviewed notes and practiced problems consistently. I found online resources and videos that explained the concepts in different ways, which reinforced my understanding. This disciplined approach helped me keep up with the class and gradually improved my confidence.

Despite these efforts, there were still times when I felt overwhelmed. However, I learned to embrace these moments as opportunities for growth. I reminded myself of my goals and the importance of perseverance. I realized that overcoming challenges is not about avoiding difficulties but about facing them head-on and learning from them.

As the semester progressed, my hard work began to pay off. I started to see improvements in my test scores and felt more confident participating in class discussions. By the end of the course, I had not only passed Advanced Calculus with a grade I was proud of, but I also gained a deeper appreciation for the subject.

This experience taught me several valuable lessons. I learned the importance of resilience and determination in the face of challenges. I discovered that seeking help and collaborating with others can lead to success. Most importantly, I realized that challenges are not obstacles to be feared but opportunities to learn and grow.

As I prepare for college and a future in business, I know that the skills I developed during this challenging academic experience will serve me well. Whether I am analyzing financial data or creating advertising strategies, the problem-solving and analytical skills I honed in Advanced Calculus will be crucial.

In conclusion, overcoming the challenges of Advanced Calculus was a defining moment in my high school journey. It tested my limits and taught me the value of perseverance and collaboration. I am grateful for this experience, as it prepared me for future challenges and reinforced my belief in my ability to succeed. As I look forward to attending Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania-Bloomsburg, I am excited to apply these lessons to my studies in accounting, advertising, business administration, and finance.
