Chemistry by Erika - December 2024 Scholarship Essay

My name is Erika Tolgyes, and I am a junior at Dixie M. Hollins High School. Reflecting on my academic journey so far, I realize that one of the most challenging experiences I have faced was during my sophomore year in my chemistry class. Chemistry was a subject that seemed to defy my understanding, and it was the first time I felt truly lost in an academic setting. However, this challenge taught me important lessons about perseverance, seeking help, and finding strategies that work for my learning style.

At the start of the year, I was excited about chemistry. I had always been curious about how things work at a molecular level, and I thought chemistry would unlock some of those mysteries. However, as we delved into the periodic table, chemical equations, and stoichiometry, I found myself struggling to keep up. The concepts were abstract, and I had a hard time visualizing what was happening in reactions. My grades reflected this struggle, and I became increasingly frustrated.

The turning point came after I received a disappointing grade on a major test. It was a wake-up call, and I realized that I needed to change my approach if I wanted to succeed. I started by acknowledging that I needed help. This was not easy for me, as I had always prided myself on being able to figure things out on my own. I reached out to my chemistry teacher, who was incredibly supportive. She offered to meet with me after school to go over the material I was struggling with. These sessions were invaluable because they allowed me to ask questions in a one-on-one setting and receive immediate feedback.

In addition to seeking help from my teacher, I also began studying with a group of classmates. We formed a study group that met once a week to review the material together. This collaborative environment was beneficial because we could explain concepts to each other in different ways, and it helped to see things from different perspectives. It also made studying more enjoyable and less isolating.

I also realized that I needed to change how I was studying. I started using online resources, such as educational videos and interactive simulations, to supplement my learning. These tools helped me visualize chemical reactions and understand the processes in a way that made more sense to me. I also began creating flashcards for key terms and equations, which helped reinforce my memory and understanding of the material.

Throughout this process, I learned the importance of perseverance. There were times when I felt like giving up, but I reminded myself of my goals and the importance of overcoming this challenge. I set small, achievable goals for each study session, which helped me stay motivated and track my progress. Slowly but surely, my understanding of chemistry improved, and so did my grades.

By the end of the year, I had not only managed to pass chemistry but had also gained a deeper appreciation for the subject. This experience taught me that it is okay to struggle and that asking for help is a strength, not a weakness. I learned to adapt my learning strategies to fit my needs and to be persistent even when things get tough.

This challenging academic experience has prepared me well for future challenges, both in college and beyond. I am interested in attending the University of South Florida, Ringling College of Art and Design, or Pinellas Technical College St. Petersburg, and I know that the skills I have developed will serve me well in any of these environments. I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and am confident that I can overcome any obstacles that come my way.

In conclusion, my experience with chemistry taught me valuable lessons about resilience, collaboration, and adaptability. I learned that challenges are opportunities for growth and that with the right mindset, support, and strategies, I can overcome any academic obstacle. I am grateful for this experience and the lessons it taught me, and I look forward to applying them as I continue my educational journey.
