Overcoming Financial Challenges in Pursuit of Education by Erika - December 2024 Scholarship Essay
One of the most challenging academic experiences I faced occurred during my undergraduate studies at Howard University. As a first-generation college student from a single-parent household, navigating the financial demands of higher education was a constant hurdle. During my sophomore year, I was forced to take a semester off due to an outstanding tuition balance that financial aid and loans could not fully cover.
The decision to step away from school was not easy. I worried about falling behind my peers and felt the pressure of proving to myself and others that I could succeed despite the odds. However, rather than letting this setback define me, I viewed it as an opportunity to grow. I immediately secured two jobs—one in retail and the other as a server—to save enough to return to Howard the following semester.
Balancing long shifts at both jobs while maintaining the focus and discipline to plan my return to school was mentally and physically taxing. I learned the importance of budgeting and managing my time wisely, prioritizing my ultimate goal of completing my degree. I also stayed engaged with my academic community, maintaining contact with professors and peers to ensure I could transition smoothly back into my studies.
When I returned to Howard, I felt a renewed sense of purpose and determination. The experience taught me invaluable lessons about resilience, perseverance, and the power of taking ownership of my journey. I carried these lessons with me throughout the remainder of my undergraduate education, graduating on time and with a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices made to reach that milestone.
This challenge has profoundly shaped my character and ambitions. It has motivated me to advocate for equitable access to education and healthcare, recognizing how systemic barriers can affect an individual’s ability to thrive. These values continue to drive me as I pursue a career in medicine, aiming to break down barriers for others as I did for myself.
