Why I Chose My Major by Erin - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

I have always been certain that I will become a veterinarian. I understand and am understood by animals in a way I have never connected with humans. This connection wasn’t something to ignore. Growing up surrounded by animals, becoming a veterinarian was simply a no-brainer for me.
Though my passion is very specific, I hope to be a well-rounded person, and know a liberal arts education will help me reach this goal. Because of this, next year I will be attending Gustavus Adolphus College on the pre-veterinary track with a major in biochemistry and molecular biology, and minors in business and music. I chose to major in biochemistry and molecular biology because I feel it is the best degree to prepare me for the rigor and difficulty of veterinary school. Much of the content will also be necessary as I continue my education and career. I chose to minor in business because it allows me to have the information I need to enter the work force, especially if I decide to own my own veterinary clinic. Finally, I chose to minor in music simply because I am passionate about it. I believe making time for the things I love is why I have been so academically successful thus far and am excited to continue doing this in college.
