"Describe a school accomplishment you're most proud of and why." by eryn - December 2016 Scholarship Essay

When I was younger,I always dreamed of becoming someone awesome, who would make a difference in the world. I remember telling stories to my parents of how I wanted to becoming a business owner in fashion. I love clothes and everything about it, including matching outfits together and the thoughts of ideas people put into their outfits. My parents would always respond and say,"that's great Eryn just make sure you do well in school because the grades you make are extremely important, which will take you to your dreams and farther". My parents's response stayed in my head and repeated over and over. I tried so hard to make good grades and make them proud, but It was something that I could not understand. Why was it so hard for me to make good grades? Why was it so hard for me to understand simple directions and stay on task? I felt so different from the other kids, even though my teachers and parents would encourage me to put forth every effort and do my best.
In 3rd grade, I was diagnose with Attention Deficit Disorder.Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is when a person is not able to fully pay attention or is easily distracted and cannot fully focus on one task for a simple period of time.I thought being diagnose with ADD was a disease or disability of some sort. I was sad that I had it and that it was causing me not to learn like the others. I struggled for a while because I could not understand. As I got older and with the help of my teachers, mental health support and medication; I was able to understand more and maintain throughout the years. My accomplishment was, instead of me becoming upset about what I had and letting it defeat me, I found motivation in it and found way better ways to become a better student. My parents was able to get a 504 plan from my school that helped with classroom accommodations such as, seating preferences and special information/instructional delivery from my teachers; while I set small goals for myself and organize my academic work space. I also became an advocate for other students, while encouraging them that ADD is not a disease or disability, it is just a special way that the mind allows us to learn.
Another accomplishment that I am proud of is being part of College of Charleston(CofC) Upward Bound program. This program encourages students like me to develop a clear vision of the future and understand self-reflection and awareness of global society. I joined the College of Charleston Upward Bound program because I was seeking opportunities in college and career preparation and support in my academics and personal development. I started the Upward Bound program while in the 9th grade and is in my final year of attending. This program have given me life coaching tools and support. I am currently receiving academic tutoring and support from the program, which I can see growth in confidence and increasing in my high school GPA. I have been on multiple college tours and is very excited and looking forward to attend college in the Fall of 2017. My goal is to become a business entrepreneur. I want to design and own my own clothing bouquet and other small businesses.
Now I am a senior in high school and looking at all obstacles, I feel that I have accomplished so much. My family and teachers have had a huge impact in my achievements throughout the years and is continuously supporting and being a source of motivation, as I move forward to my college years. I have truly grown into my personality as a young women and am becoming my own individual self. I want to make my parents so proud and work hard achieving my career goals. My family is continuously encouraging to take part in any school or community activities that will benefit me accomplishing more goals. I appreciate all the opportunities and experience that I have encounter it or without effort, and look forward to going college, where I can enable more experience and educational opportunities.
