My Outstanding School Achievement by Ethan - December 2016 Scholarship Essay

A school accomplishment that stands out in my mind occurred during my junior year of high school. I was enrolled in a college level writing and composition class. This class was extremely challenging, yet I was learning so much. We were assigned to write an essay significant in length every quarter. We were assigned a research towards the latter part of the school year. This research essay turned out to be the accomplishment that I am most proud of in high school.

In this writing and composition class we learned how to connect to a reader through writing and ultimately make our writing effective. To make writing effective, we had to connect to the reader to persuade them or give valid information with research behind it. The goal of this research essay was to give a statement on a preferably debated topic such as global warming or gun control. Then, the author would choose a side of the argument and conduct research. The research essay was to be eight to ten pages in length.

To conduct research for our paper, our class used online articles, books, magazines, and newspapers. Once a good article was found, I would write down information that I think would be useful. We also wrote down all of our sources and did further research to validate the source. This process was very time consuming but was critical to the essay.

The next process was starting to write the actual paper. We would write one paragraph at a time, proofread it and make our corrections. This paper had to be near perfect. Paragraph after paragraph, source after source, the pages started to pile up. The weeks passed and the due date was getting closer. I had finally composed about nine pages of writing and a bibliography. I then proceeded to email my final draft to my teacher.

This research essay turned out to be the accomplishment that I am most proud of in high school.
A few days passed and I was constantly checking my grades online to see what grade I had earned. The grade finally showed up one day, it was a 98%. I felt so relieved but more importantly I was satisfied. I was proud of myself. The countless hours of research and writing finally paid off. I don't often get excited about grades but that day I showed my parents and let them read my essay. The dedication and hard work paid off and it made me extremely proud.
