Determination in Adversity by Ethan - December 2016 Scholarship Essay
In all of my days in schooling, from my young days in Alaska, to my current dual enrollment at AAEC, (Arizona Agribusiness and Equine Center) and EMCC, (Estrella Mountain Community College), there have been many goals in school that I've looked up to accomplishing, but none were as meaningful to me as this past semester of Pre-Calculus. At the beginning of the year, the entirety of the class took it's usual testing to see if you had the knowledge, and ability in Math to be recommended to the class. The score I got on this test was below what was required, so the teacher, one I knew from other students to be very hard on her class, spoke with me. She told me that I should drop out of the class now, or risk losing my credit, and possibly not graduate. I was fearful, but I knew that this was something I would need to do in order to challenge myself, and prepare for the years soon to come in college. I told the teacher I would stay in the class, and study hard in order to succeed this challenge that was fated for failure.
The class took a running start, and despite my focus on studying, I started to fall behind slowly. However, this didn't do anything but build upon my motivation, and I worked ever harder to succeed and fulfill my full potential in this class. It was a struggle, especially with all of my other classes, but in the end, through all my work and all my determination, I ended the semester with a B in the class. I'm incredibly proud of this because math has always been my worst subject, and I was able to truly go against what I believed were my limits, and succeed, even in the face of incredible adversity. In the end, I'm glad, and proud of this, because it helped me to overall become an even stronger person, and is going to be extremely helpful in the challenges I will surely face in college.
